Chelsea announced Hazard's role for today's match:
Hazard Replaced by Zouma Following Ankle Injury
Monday, Dec. 22
Chelsea's Twitter account noted the star player's injury before the Premier League revealed his replacement:
Hazard was the team's leading scorer during the 2013-14 season, per WhoScored.com, and he saw his breakout campaign rewarded with the PFA Young Player of the year Award.
The versatile winger, who can also play in a central role, has been one of the Blues' most consistent performers in recent years and has hardly missed time on the pitch due to injury.
According to Transfermarkt.co.uk, the only injury to sideline Hazard for an extended period of time was the hamstring injury that forced him to sit out the Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season.
The Blues have tremendous depth at the winger and attacking midfielder positions, with Mohamed Salah, Andre Schurrle, Willian, Oscar and even Cesc Fabregas all capable of filling one of the three available spots behind the lone striker in Jose Mourinho's 4-2-3-1. Thankfully, Hazard's injury was not serious.
