The Three Transfers Road to Improvement: Special Milan Edition

Mohamed Eldin MasriJul 8, 2009

Milan have a lot to do in order to become the force they once were, and with all the money that they've recieved from the Kaka transfer they'll be on the market to reinforce the squad, here are the areas that Milan need to patch up this summer.

Attacking Midfielder

Now that Milan has acquired the services of Oguchi Onyewu and with the legendary Nesta and Gattuso back as well, they will be on the lookout for midfielders. The perfect move would be to re-acquire the services of David Beckham and sign him on a long term contract.

Beckham has already proved every doubter wrong when he joined Milan and gave a few magnificent performances, proving to the world that he is not yet finished.

Even though most people would think that acquiring Becks would mean Milan are making the same mistakes all over again, and that they are still buying older players, no one could argue that Beckham's style of play has nothing to do with running, stamina or getting physical.

It's all about technique and vision, and we could easily state that vision grows with age and experience.

The Milan doctor also stated that with his excellent health record, he could play professional football for four more years, so a long term contract for some one who has already proved himself in the Rossoneri shirt is a must, and with Beckham wanting to join Milan permanently, this transfer should be easy to complete.

However, that would mean that throughout the MLS season, Milan would be without a Midfielder, so I believe they should try to acquire the services of another midfielder as well.

Van der Vaart would be a worthy addition.

He is different from any player in the Milan midfield squad and he is also a player who could play in almost every area up front. The 26-year-old has International experience and is also the Netherlands' vice captain. Since Milan sold Madrid Kaka, this should give Milan an advantage in negotiations. If Milan could get him from Madrid before Chelsea or any other team, he would be a great addition to the squad.

It all depends however, on how much Milan is willing to pay.

Striker

Now that Shevchenko has gone back to Chelsea, Borriello not achieving what was expected from him at all, and Inzaghi getting older, Milan needs to get a World Class striker of the highest caliber.

While Galliani stated that they are working hard to secure the signature of Luis Fabiano,  Milan should go for Huntelaar instead.

Fabiano is at the prime of his career, but at the age of 28 Fabiano would be with the Milan squad for only three or four years. Unlike Beckham, Fabiano relies on his strength, speed and stamina, after a few years, Fabiano's abilities will probably be on the decline, and I can't see him having the same success at a late age like Maldini and Nesta.

While Huntelaar is not as fast or physical as Fabiano, he's young, has great positioning, great striker instincts, and great reflexes.

The way he plays is the same as Van Nistelrooy. Pato and Huntelaar would make a great partnership up front, Borriello could be a backup striker along with Inzaghi in case anyone gets injured.

Goalkeeper

Milan is truly in need of a goalkeeper, Abbiati isn't consistent enough, Dida is out of shape, and Kalac is one terrible goalkeeper.

Only with a world class goalkeeper, can Milan go through the season with minimum goals conceded.

While Milan is probably going to stick with Abbiati, the goalkeeper Milan should acquire the most is Sebastian Frey. Already proven himself in Serie A, and also one of the main reasons Fiorentina qualified for the Champions League two seasons in a row, Frey moving to Milan would only increase his chances in becoming one of the greatest goalkeepers in the planet.

It would also mean that Fiorentina won't have Frey to save them all the time, meaning that they won't bother Milan and ruin their chances in joining the Champions League like they did in the 2007-08 season.
