Spurs Next Step After Rasheed
Acordinig to ESPN, Sheed will cancel meetings with San Antonio and Orlando, and will commit to wear green for the next two seasons. This leaves a gapping hole in spurs plans, doesn't it? However, the spurs lack of over the top commitment to Wallace makes me all the more convinced that the Spurs have a plan up their sleeves.
As most know by now the spurs back up plan is Antonio McDyess, who is almost averaging a double double with nearly 10 points and 10 rebounds a game; not a bad plan B is it? But Antonio has already been courted by other teams, and it might be a little to late to show a player how much we need him this late into free agency.
Gary Tanguay, reported soon after the Rasheed signing that the Celtics would be interested in signing suns forward grant hill, and if this were to happen then big baby,Glen Davis would most likely end up in San Antonio for only part of the MLE. And now, two days away from the official signing period, there has been no reported teams lookinig at Drew Gooden. One or both of these players would make me a happy guy.
Drew, who played 19 regular season games and 4 post season games has proven two things to me. One, he has the basketball IQ of my dead hamster, and two, he is an athletic young post who is willing to kill himself to win a game. So, although he would need to improve drastically on defence, he is a good fit for the spurs, who are in desperate need of a veteran big man.
Glen Davis however, would be at a higher priority. Although he really isn't the " veteran" that can help timmy in teaching the younger, newer guys, he is an amazing low post force who can grab rebounds as well as score. And if we could manage to sign both of these men(which i must say is highly unlikely, but still a possibility) we would be able to move Bonner to his natural position and add much needed depth on the wing.
Another possibility is a trade, which would need to include at least three of our role players or one of our stars. This could nearly whip us clean of all veteran role players. In all honesty, this is my least favorite idea. We need these experienced role players (Finely and Bonner or even Ginobili) more than the inexperienced Mahinimi or Blair or any other rookie players which would have to become our bench. In other words, we would become too young and timmy wouldn't be teaching, he would be baby sitting.
However that would open up the possibility of Tyson Chandler, Marcus Camby, or even David West.
So however it is done, the spurs have a hole to fill before we can say that we can beat the Lakers or any other contender, And its a big tall hole.
