The Best Memes the Internet Offered Up During the World Cup

The World Cup concluded on Sunday, and what a World Cup it was.

The Brazilian showcase was as good as any World Cup, with plenty of moments of high drama and individual brilliance.

Of course, footballers weren't the only ones doing fine work.

With nearly every major event, memes swept the Internet in typically hilarious fashion.

Here we present the best.

The Netherlands provided the first shock of the tournament, opening their World Cup with a 5-1 win over defending champions Spain.

Robin van Persie scored an early candidate for goal of the tournament with an acrobatic headed equaliser.

In the aftermath, the scene was immortalised.

Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa put in an incredible shift in a 0-0 draw against Brazil, and his exploits gave him hero status.

American Tim Howard got the Ochoa treatment after an incredible display against Belgium in the round of 16, as #ThingsTimHowardCouldSave exploded.

Luis Suarez was vilified by memes after he bit Italy's Giorgio Chiellini.

Diminutive Frenchman Mathieu Valbuena hopped on Olivier Giroud's back after scoring France's third goal against Switzerland, and his height (lack of it) was greatly exaggerated.

Whenever Rodrigo Palacio appeared for Argentina, his rat tail was frequently given the Miley Cyrus-wrecking ball treatment.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar's game-winning goal against Mexico produced one of the tournament's best celebrations, as his flying kick of the corner flag was pictured perfectly.

When images circulated of Dutch goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen appearing to take a seat against the goalpost (he was arranging the wall), the Internet had a ton of fun with it.

Images of Colombian star James Rodriguez went viral not long after he converted a penalty in the quarter-finals against Brazil with a giant bug on his arm.

Cillessen sat on the bug, too.

Argentina's Alejandro Sabella appeared to nearly pass out after a Gonzalo Higuain miss, and the moment was celebrated.
