Philadelphia Independence Unveils New Logo on Independence Day

What's News Jul 6, 2009

The Philadelphia Independence women’s pro soccer team unveiled its logo this Fourth of July weekend, a selection that further strengthens the team’s identity and the city’s great history, stature, and tradition.

Team officials say, "The design represents an enduring look of pride that the Independence players and fans will be proud to wear on and off the field."

"The Independence logo is etched onto a shield in the shape of a stylized keystone. The shield itself is an important symbol that speaks to the soccer essence and denotes the sport, with some of the most famous soccer clubs in the world bearing a shield as their badge."

The keystone, represented in the logo, is an architectural term that refers to the central wedge-shaped stone in an arch that holds all the other stones in place.

Pennsylvania earned its designation as the “Keystone State” due to its central location in the thirteen colonies and its key position in the economic, social, and political development of the United States.

The logo combines both the soccer battle shield and the image of the Keystone in team colors. The Independence team logo has an "unyielding backdrop of strength, power, and patriotism—exactly like the fans of Philadelphia."

Surrounding the shield is a battle-torn flag or military unit banner, emblazoned with the Independence name and team motto “We the People.” The war-torn banner is reminiscent of 18th century battle emblems and serves as an icon of the Independence spirit: aggressive, united, and perseverance.

“We the People” was chosen as the Independence motto because, as the first words to our Constitution, this phrase unites the country and guarantees its citizens empowerment and protection.

We believe with the help and support of the fans, the banner ornamented with the “We the People” maxim will become a common site in the stands at Independence matches.

Finally, the inclusion of “EST. 2010” on the logo is to mark the beginning of a permanent, positive soccer presence in the city and a winning tradition for years to come.

"Our logo release marks a time we are in the midst of a lot of momentum. We are hard at work preparing for the upcoming player drafts to build the foundation for an excellent 2010 roster."

"We also remain busy with expanding our youth development programs, releasing our ticketing programs, and implementing our club affiliate and membership programs."
