The San Jose Sharks This Week: Deals Or Deals

Alex FischlerJul 5, 2009

There are plenty of rumors during the offseason in the NHL, but not a lot of them have been involving the San Jose Sharks.

This week things will become a little bit clearer for the team in teal. Swedish goalie Jonas Gustavsson is expected to make his decision on which team he will play for next season. The three teams who have a chance to sign him are San Jose, Toronto, and Dallas. On many Web sites Gustavsson is said to have narrowed his decision to two teams: Dallas and Toronto.

Who knows, maybe Gustavsson will come to San Jose and that will open the door for Evgeni Nabokov to be traded.

Anyways the two rumors that I have heard surrounding the Sharks are quite intriguing.

The first deal involves Ottawa Senators' star Dany Heatley. The Sharks are, supposedly, offering Patrick Marleau and Jonathan Cheechoo for Heatley. This deal will probably not occur because Ottawa General Manager, Bryan Murray, has rejected all offers except a deal that involved the Edmonton Oilers. Heatley's agent didn't like the sound of that deal and apparently it fell through.

The second rumor that has been circling San Jose is a deal that would involve Chicago and Toronto. There have been no names mentioned in the deal, but it is expected to happen this upcoming week.

Enough about the rumors, let's talk about what the Sharks have already done. They have signed defenseman Kent Huskins and forward Ryan Clowe to new deals. Huskins' deal is for two years at $1.7 million a year. Clowe's deal is for four years at $3.6 million a year. The Clowe signing is great because he is an integral part of this team's future. The Huskins signing is good because it allows the Sharks to have some options defensively each night.

The Sharks have to do something sooner or later. According to Doug Wilson, six to eight roster changes will occur.

Stay tuned for more. If anything happens this week, go to my page. I will be one of the first to know.
