Manchester United Sign Michael Owen On Free Transfer

Yousaf AitizazJul 3, 2009

Manchester United has signed Michael Owen on a free transfer on a two year contract. After spending four miserable seasons with Newcastle United, who were relegated from the Premier League, Michael Owen is hoping to take his career back on track at Old Trafford.

After losing Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid and Carlos Tevez most probably to Manchester City, Sir Alex was trying to lure some big names to the club but all in vain with Ribery keen on Madrid, Karim Benzema already joined the Spanish club, and David Villa staying in Spain.

Manchester United has signed Luis Antonio Valencia, 23 from Wigan, this summer, and now Micheal Owen.

Is this a poor signing?

No is the answer, because if he succeeds then he will be a great signing like Santa Cruz by Blackburn who was just signed for £3 million and sold for around £17 million to Man City. He has been signed for nothing, and if he flops Man United will lose nothing. But if expensive players like Benzema and Aguero flops, then what will happen?

Owen's career:

Micheal Owen had a legendary career at Liverpool and was so called the best English striker after Shearer. Scored 40 times for country and 157 league goals in bag. Owen can still take his career back on track with huge confidence he has got. Although he had a horrifying four seasons with Newcastle Utd he can still find his magic alongside Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov.

Analysis:

When David Becham left Man Utd and was replaced by Ronaldo no one predicted that Ronaldo would fill the void left by Beckham. But Ronaldo showed just more than that. All we can do in this situation is to trust Sir Alex that he can show that magic again with Valencia replacing Ronaldo and Owen replacing Tevez.
