Will Raiders' Darrius Heyward-Bey End Up a Bust?

Sean E. DouglasJul 1, 2009

The Raiders had the 7th overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft and many thought when Michael Crabtree was available, Oakland would select him. Instead they threw the football world a curve ball and selected wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey.

No doubt this move brought on much controversy, as after all Crabtree was a two time Fred Biletnikoff award winner (only receiver in college history to receive this award twice).

Fred Biletnikoff is a NFL Hall of Famer and played for the Raiders for those of you that don't know.

I can only speculate that the Raiders choose Darrius because of their obsession with physically gifted athletes. When it comes to physical skills Bey clearly has those, with his 6'2, 210 pound frame and a 4.3, 40 yard dash time.

Darrious is having hamstring problems in camp

Right now Darrius Heyward-Bey is battling hamstring issues throughout camp. If he can not stay on the field, then his productivity will go into the gutter, for his rookie year.

I hope that Darrius can over come this lingering problem, because Crabtree is playing for the San Francisco 49ers. If Bey turns out to be a bust, the Raiders are going to look very foolish. It will hurt even more if Crabtree becomes the great player, that many people
project he will be.

As it stands Darrius has come out and told the press that his hamstring is at 80% right now and believes it will be at 100% by the time camp starts.

Fantasy Football Information on Darrius Heyward-Bey

If Bey can stay healthy once camp starts then he should be the No.1 target in the Raiders offense this season. The Raiders need Darrius's skills very badly in their offense at this point in time. But right now for Bey to have the maximum fantasy value, he need to have Jeff Garcia under center then JaMarcus Russell is still progressing as a quarterback.

For that to happen I believe Russell will either have to fail horribly or he will have to get injured. Until that time Bey is nothing more then a late round flair in fantasy drafts this season. He need to prove he can stay healthy and be a consistent target on the football field (something he did not do in college).

Look for the Raiders to use receivers Jonnie Lee Higgins and Chaz Schilens, if Bey can not stay on the field this season.
