Video Evidence: Eldin Jakupovic (Tottenham)

Ronaldo Assis de Moreira Jul 1, 2009

According to today’s Times of London Tottenham have entered informal talks with Lokomotiv Moscow over a potential move for 23 year-old shot stopper Eldin Jakupovic with a £2.5 million price tag mooted.

The Swiss goalkeeper has had somewhat of a chequered career history. He began his career at Grasshopper-Club Zurich and between 2004-2006 he made 13 appearances for the club.

As with most young players once he had tasted first team action he was keen to go out on loan and add to his limited experience. He spent one season on loan with FC Thun helping them to Champions League qualification where he caught the eye of his present club and was bought for an undisclosed sum.

At Lokomotiv he made 20 appearances helping them to the State Cup. Jakupovic surprisingly then moved on loan back to where he began his career at Zurich. During the 2007-2008 season he made 28 appearances scoring one goal, a 94th minute equaliser against BSC Young Boys during his third match for the club. (Watch here.)

Jakupovic stands at 6ft 4inches and is thought of as a reliable goalie who makes few mistakes despite his tender age. He is quick to come for crosses, although like many of today’s keepers he prefers to punch rather than catch. Quick reflexes are also a vital part to his armoury and he is able to stand his ground on one on one situations and prompt the striker into making the first move.

He has earned one cap with the Swiss national team, his adopted country after fleeing Bosnia during the war as a young boy. However, since he has failed to add to his solitary cap rumours have spread that Jakupovic feels betrayed by Switzerland believing he was only selected that one time to ensure that he could never play for Bosnia in the future.

Here at 101gg we do not believe that he will solve Tottenham’s goalkeeping conundrum. With Heurelho Gomes still on the books combined with Carlo Cudicini’s greater experience, it is likely that if Jakupovic comes to Spurs he will be the third choice keeper rather than a starter.

Sorry Spurs fans.
