WWE Money in the Bank 2014: Champions Who Will Continue Their Reign

At WWE’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view on June 29, expect at least two champions on the roster to fight off their challengers and retain their belts.

Per Monday’s Raw, of course, one person who certainly won’t be retaining his title is Daniel Bryan.

In the dramatic opening of the show, he was stripped on his WWE World Heavyweight Championship by a gloating Triple H and Stephanie McMahon after company doctors concluded he would not be cleared by the time of the pay-per-view. A new champion will therefore be crowned in the ladder match at the show.

But there are still champions whom you can expect to retain their titles.

First of all, Paige needs to keep her Divas Championship at the pay-per-view if she has any hope of turning her reign around and making it a credible one.

Alas, WWE writers have so far booked the star terribly—she’s had limited mic time, and her wins almost always come off as complete flukes. Constantly putting her against Alicia Fox—the two have faced each other too many times to count by now—is also hurting her.

Fans must be struggling to take Paige’s reign seriously...I know I certainly am. For those who have followed the star since her NXT days—where she was frequently a highlight of the show—her promotion to the main roster has to have been somewhat disappointing.

She’s just not taking off as Divas champion—not that anyone could with this terrible booking.

So if her reign even has a chance of being rescued, she has to retain it at Money in the Bank against whoever the challenger is in a clean, totally credible way—and hopefully against someone other than Alicia Fox.

As the spectacular Natalya vs. Charlotte match at last week’s NXT show proved, the company has the potential to have a truly great and thriving women’s division—maybe the best it has had since the glorious heyday of Trish Stratus and Lita in the early 2000s.

It just needs to start booking the girls—mainly its Divas champion—in an efficient manner.

Look for Wade Barrett to retain his intercontinental belt too.

Barrett failed to qualify for the Money in the Bank belt when he took on Sheamus on Monday night. (He fell to a powerful Brogue Kick after a very competitive match.) It must have been a deeply disappointing result for the star, but it also ensures he will be defending his title in Boston.

I think he’ll retain it too.

The British wrestler has so far been on a roll with the title, and taking it off him now would surely be a massive mistake. Indeed, he’s one of the few performers who have actually benefited from it. Why wouldn’t WWE continue his reign?

Poor Daniel Bryan may have been stripped of the belt, but expect Paige and Barrett to retain their belts heading into the summer. Nothing else makes logical booking sense.
