Soccer Turning Point Or Just a Flash in The Pan

Scott WordhamJun 29, 2009

Was this Confederation Cup Final a turning point for USA soccer?

That has been the question ever since this US soccer squad lucked its way into the finals.  The stars aligned, the sun shined on us and there we were, in our first UEFA final game ever.

Then this US soccer squad got the sports world all frothy at the mouth by taking a 2-0 lead going into the half.  Yes, the same team that got spanked by the same Brazilian squad now led after 45 minutes; and only had 45 more plus stoppage time to put a stamp on this sport. Then reality set in.

The US does not have the horses to play with world's best teams on the biggest stages.  Our players that play overseas are bench players and role players.  We do not produce stars and impact players.  Our best athletes play other sports in the States because that is where the money is.

We do lack the passion for game but then again when you know there is money to be made in NFL, MLB, NBA and even the NHL, then why concentrate on soccer.  Sure it's fun to play as kid so that you learn teamwork and good sportsmanship but if you are serious about making a living at a sport then soccer takes a quick spot on the back burner while most of us focus on the other sports.

None of these blips on the soccer radar will have any lasting affect until we have the players to back each performance and build upon them.  In all rights we should not even have been in the finals.  When we enter a tournament, win some pool play, get through the elimination rounds and get into another finals match on effort and not luck then it will be a significant moment.  Until then I'm not watching.

I'm Scott Wordham with a word on sports.
