WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from May 23

The Doctor Chris MuellerMay 23, 2014

Every week on Bleacher Report, I take an in-depth look at WWE SmackDown to recap the action, offer analysis and grade the matches, segments and anything else that takes place on the show. I also provide some predictions on the direction of storylines.

This week's show was part of the current tour WWE is doing in the United Kingdom, and that usually leads to a good show.

The U.K. fans do not get to see WWE live as often, so WWE Superstars tend to put a little more effort into their matches to give them something special.

The long-awaited debut of Bo Dallas finally happened, Hulk Hogan made a special appearance and there were a few really good matches on the show. It was a good week for the blue brand.

Lets take a look at what went down on this week's SmackDown.

Hulk Hogan

1 of 10

Jimmy Hart started out the show by bringing out Hulk Hogan, who appeared in a WWE ring in England for the first time in 20 years.

He basically just talked about Legends House and being in the U.K. While it's always great to see Hogan, this felt like a waste of having him on the show.

WWE could have had him hype some kind of match for the night at the very least.

Grade: D

Some notes from the segment:

  • Hogan has lost some mass. He looks good. He is moving around alright and he seems to be in high spirits.
  • Jimmy Hart doesn't age. He has looked the same since 1985.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Batista

2 of 10

This was a great match. Dolph Ziggler looked very aggressive against the much larger Batista, and Batista continuing to get back his ring skills.

This was one of the more brutal No DQ matches we have seen in a while. A lot of time was spent outside the ring, and plenty of spots involved chairs or steel steps.

Michael Cole nearly got taken out when Ziggler sent Batista over the announce table, and JBL made sure to berate Cole for acting like a coward.

It's just too bad that this isn't a feud where Ziggler can eventually come out on top. Batista ended up winning with a Spear in what will likely end up being the match of the night.

Grade: A

Some notes from the match:

  • I give Batista credit for taking a lot of punishment in this match. Some of those chair shots had to be painful.
  • How did Cole get taken out? It didn't look like Batista hit him when he went flying over the table.
  • If WWE management doesn't see the value in Ziggler after this match, then he has no hope.
  • The spot where Ziggler missed Batista coming off the apron and caught his foot on the steel steps could have resulted in a bad injury. Ziggler landed really awkwardly on his leg when he hit the floor.

The Funkadactyls vs. Eva Marie and Nikki Bella

3 of 10

Summer Rae was the special guest referee for this match to push the feud she has with Eva Marie from Total Divas.

Summer refused to count the two times Eva and Nikki had one of The Funkadactyls down, but when Eva's shoulders were down, the blonde bombshell made a fast count.

Even The Funkadactyls seemed upset at the way the end of the match went down. This was basically a commercial for Total Divas in the form of the match.

Grade: F

Some notes from the match:

  • Tony Chimel screwed up Eva Marie's name during the intro, and JBL and Cole made sure to make fun of him for it.
  • Line from Cole: "The point of the referee is to count."
  • JBL's response: "That's not one of Summer Rae's strong suits. Are you going to ask her to spell next?"

Bo Dallas vs. Sin Cara

4 of 10

The match was longer than expected for a debut. Usually, WWE feeds a newcomer some unknown jobbers at first, but Sin Cara was the opponent here, and he gave Dallas a decent match.

The way WWE is using Bo Dallas is interesting. It almost reminds me of Kurt Angle's early heel work. Dallas is saying a lot of positive things, but the way he is doing it makes people hate him.

He gives everyone the thumbs up, shakes his opponent's hand after the match and tells people to reach for their dreams. His delivery is halfway between someone who is delusional and someone who wants to be a cult leader.

It's going to be very easy for fans to hate Bo Dallas. Hopefully he doesn't get lost in is brother's shadow.

Dallas picked up the win with a bulldog with the help of the ring ropes.

Grade: B-

Some notes from the match:

  • Sin Cara is using the trampoline for his entrance again.
  • It's hard to tell with the magic of editing, but it seemed like Dallas was getting some good heat.
  • I really hope Bray Wyatt and Bo Dallas have some kind of interaction at some point. They do not have to join forces or have any kind of angle, just some kind of run-in backstage.
  • Bray Wyatt delivered a promo after the break about John Cena. Having the two brothers go back to back is interesting timing.

Bray Wyatt Speaking Tongues

5 of 10

Most of this was pretty standard Bray Wyatt stuff, but toward the end, he had a few moments where he rambled incoherent words before singing to the crowd.

Wyatt keeps finding ways to add to his character, which will lead to better longevity. Luke Harper and Erick Rowan were both silent for this entire segment, but Harper seems to be better in small doses anyway.

Speaking in tongues was a little weird, but it might not be something he is going to do on a regular basis. Seeing how the fans respond to it will probably make that decision for him.

Grade: B+

Alberto Del Rio vs.

6 of 10

Cesaro and Paul Heyman were on commentary for this match, which means Cesaro's feud with Sheamus is in full swing. Get it?

Bad puns aside, this was a solid match. These two always have very physical encounters, and this was no different. They have faced each other dozens of times, so they know each other well.

Cesaro spoke mostly in foreign languages during the match, which seemed to upset Michael Cole since he did not know what kind of answers he was getting to his questions.

Cesaro caused a disqualification during the match by pulling Sheamus from the ring and delivering a Neutralizer on the floor.

Grade: B-

Some notes from the match:

  • Del Rio might be boring, but he deserves better than the booking he has been getting. He isn't losing a lot, but he has nothing to do.
  • I love Cesaro's jacket. Where can I get one?
  • Cesaro and Sheamus have the chance to steal the show at Payback, and they may just do it.

Adam Rose Abducts Vickie Guerrero

7 of 10

Vickie brought Adam Rose to the ring and seemed to be enjoying herself, but then Rose asked the fans if Vickie is a lemon or a rosebud, and they gave the answer anyone would expect them to give.

Rose ended up making Vickie fall off the apron into his crowd of party animals, and they carried her away while Rose's music played.

So it seems Adam Rose has kidnapped a woman. That should work out well for him.

The whole point of having weeks of video packages is to get a crowd ready to see a Superstar wrestle. Rose has been around for a few weeks and has yet to have a real match on Raw or SmackDown. It's time to have him mix it up.

Grade: C

Some notes from the segment:

  • When Vickie was yelling, "I'm not a lemon," I had flashbacks to Owen Hart yelling, "I'm not a nugget!"
  • Rest in peace, Owen.

The Usos and John Cena Go Hunting for Babies

8 of 10

The Usos and John Cena gave an interview backstage, and Cena had a few lines to mock the way Wyatt makes no sense sometimes.

He said a few strange things, but the line about going hunting for babies was hilarious for some reason. The look on Renee Young's face while Cena was ranting was priceless.

The Usos and John Cena are a good fit. They like bright green and all have a lot of enthusiasm for the business.

The Usos talked about Adam Rose a little bit before Cena showed up. Normally, a quick interview like this wouldn't get a whole slide, but the line about hunting babies was too funny to pass up.

Somebody else had to have thought that was as funny as I did. Since WWE did not post this video on YouTube, you get to watch a Divas photo shoot.

Grade: B

The Wyatt Family vs. Jimmy and Jey Uso

9 of 10

Nobody will be surprised to find out that this was an entertaining match. All the things that make both teams great were on display here.

Bray Wyatt ended up getting his team disqualified by pushing Jey Uso off the top rope when he was going to hit Rowan with the Superfly Splash.

Cena and Wyatt had a staredown after the match, but Wyatt retreated up the ramp while Cena watched him from the ring.

The match was good enough to where the DQ finish shouldn't spoil it, but this was the second good match of the night that ended in a DQ. The Wyatt Family should have gotten the win here to keep them as top contenders for the Tag titles.

Grade: B-

Some notes from the match:

  • Jey Uso diving over the ring post to the outside is always a really exciting move to watch. It looks so much more dangerous than just going over the top rope.
  • I wish Cena and Wyatt's feud hadn't been the main focus here, but I do not fault WWE for making it that way. Cena vs. Wyatt is a hot angle, and the company wants to squeeze all the life out of it that it can.

Thoughts and Predictions

10 of 10

SmackDown showed a marked improvement over last week's show. Most of the matches were high quality, and many of the segments were very entertaining.

Dolph Ziggler and Batista stole the show with the No DQ match at the top of the broadcast. They took the fight in and out of the ring many times, using everything around the ring as a weapon.

The Usos and The Wyatt family closed out the show with an entertaining bout, Bo Dallas debuted with a win over Sin Cara and Hulk Hogan made a quick appearance to hype Legend's House.

Sheamus and Alberto Del Rio had a good match, but it was cut short after Cesaro took Sheamus out with a Neutralizer at ringside.

Payback is right around the corner, and WWE has done a pretty good job laying the groundwork for all the big matches. The Daniel Bryan situation caught the writers off guard, but we will find out Monday what they have planned.

Predictions

  • Daniel Bryan will surrender the title, and Stephanie will make the new main event for Payback by the end of the night on Raw.
  • Someone will eventually shave off the beard of a member of The Wyatt Family during or after a match.
  • Big E will introduce his five-count gimmick to the main roster, possibly after turning heel.
  • At least three Superstars will come and tell Stephanie why they deserve to be WWE champion after Bryan surrenders the belt.
  • Alicia Fox will beat Paige again on Raw, setting up a match for Payback.
  • Adam Rose will make his main-roster wrestling debut at Payback.
  • Other than the WWE World title, at least one other title will change hands at Payback.
