Derrick Brooks: Would You Be Interested?
I'm intrigued by this week's installment of Peter King's Monday Morning Quarterback that asks the question why 11-time Pro Bowl Linebacker Derrick Brooks is still unemployed after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 17 weeks ago. While I find it difficult to agree with much of what King writes, I have to agree with his position on Brooks.
Derrick Brooks is a Hall of Fame player, no doubt about it. While I understand why some teams might be looking to invest in younger players to build for the future, I agree that he still has tremendous value at the age of 36.
Brooks had somewhat of a down year last season posting 73 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and 1 interception. While this may not seem like a total loss, you have to go back and look at his productions from previous years when he was racking up over a 120 tackles and would average a couple picks a year.
Now, Brooks' real value is his knowledge of the game. The article references his knowledge of defensive schemes and his ability to help younger players make the transition from the college game to the NFL.
The article also references Brooks willingness to take a much smaller contract than what he had been paid in previous years, still no one is willing to give him a chance.

Although I'm very excited about our young linebackers, I could live will giving Brooks an opportunity to come in and start until Rey Maualuga is ready to go.
When Brooks is on the field teams would love to have a player of his caliber, unfortunately, he may be forgotten.
Let me know what you think...
