Rockets Win in Draft With No Picks

Scotty RaubaJun 26, 2009

The Rockets entered June 25th, draft day, with zero of the sixty picks. However they still managed to make a huge splash landing three 2nd rounders with tremendous potential.

32nd from Washington, acquired for cash considerations-Jermaine Taylor

He played four years at the University of Central Florida, where TV coverage and recognition are not great, or even good. But he still managed to lead his team to an NCAA tournament bid his senior year, while averaging 26.2 points per game, good for third in Div. I ranks. He is an NBA ready shooting guard who addresses a Rockets need, a wingman who can create their own shot. Some say that if he went to a big time school and played like he did at UCF, he would be a Top 12 pick.

34th from Denver-Sergio Llull

I admit, I had never heard of this guy before yesterday. But from what I've seen on video clips and statistics, he looks like he can play the point efficiently. He averaged 8.6 points and 2.8 assists in the very competitive Spanish league. His numbers aren't great, although better than Jrue Holiday's, but he is considered a "project point guard" with experience in professional basketball leagues. Don't look for him to contribute right away, or even make the roster right away. I say in two years he can be a solid back up to Aaron Brooks/Kyle Lowry.

44th from Detroit-Chase Budinger

Although he free fell on draft day, to many he was considered a Top 20 pick. He's 6'7 and played Small Forward for Arizona where he averaged 18 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. He also shot 40 percent from downtown, which could be very valuable in the Rocket's system. Immediate contribution is what the Rockets are going to look for this following season from him, and I expect him to deliver, making the Rockets A+ bench even better.

The Rockets received a project point, and two ready to play wings, for a future second rounder and only three cash packages. Otherwise known as, A STEAL. This gives them breathing room if they decide to trade Tracy McGrady and not re-sign Von Wafer who's stock will be high this off-season.
