Will Danny Ainge Make a Move?

chris faliteJun 25, 2009

If Danny Ainge is looking to make a move before the season, he might be reluctant to pull the trigger.  Before draft day rumors were swirling that Ainge was shopping Rajon Rondo around because he didn't like his work ethic.  On the other side, both Cleveland and Orlando have made significant upgrades to their rosters.  Should Ainge feel compelled to make a move to answer their conference rivals, he better make sure it's the right one.  Breaking up the 2008 NBA Champions without similar results would certainly cause for media chaos in Boston.

There's been the rumors that Ray Allen and Rondo were being swapped for the Piston's Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, and Rodney Stuckey.  But let's be real, that was only a Boston fantasy.  Then there were even draft pick rumors involving the same two Celtic stars.  Draft day came and went with no moves made.

So here's a little "what if" trade for you NBA fans to ponder...

Trade Rondo and Allen to the Los Angeles Clippers for Baron Davis and Marcus Camby.

Now at first glance this might seem like a ridiculous trade for both parties, but hold on— let's take a look at some facts.

Allen will make over $18 million this upcoming season alone, while Camby and Davis combined made roughly $22 million last season.  Shipping Camby would clear cap room for LA and solve their overload at the big man position.  While adding an energetic point guard to a sure to be athletic team, Coach Dunleavy will also have a hall of fame bound shooter to mentor the young Eric Gordon, as well as Allen's expiring contract.  The trade would also grant the disgruntled Davis his wish to leave town after last summer's contract.

For Boston, the need at the center position would be solved with Camby.  Camby, along side the 2008 Defensive Player of the Year Kevin Garnett, would solve the Shaq-Howard matchups respectively.

Baron would fill the point guard slot while adding assists plus consistent offense which Boston has lacked.  The only problem here is the Celtics would have to find someone to fill the shooting guard position.  That could be done through free agency if need be or by using one of their big men in a trade after acquiring Camby.

Although this would be a good team on paper, it would be dumb to split up the "Big Three" without trying them for one more run.  If Ainge feels like he needs to make a move however I think this makes the most sense.
