Memo to The Rockets' Front Office: Do Nothing

Jeff ShullJun 25, 2009

When I hear some of the trade rumors supposedly circling around the NBA, it makes me sick to my stomach.

While I would not be reluctant to the idea of trading Tracy McGrady away for some legitimate backup players, packaging him with some combination of Brooks, Landry, Scola or Battier would only make fans angry.

Recent rumors have surfaced that there are "serious talks" between the Rockets and Suns that would send Amar'e Stoudemire, Goran Dragic, and Alando Tucker for McGrady and Aaron Brooks.

This trade would make me livid. The Rockets would certainly be getting a superstar who could hold his own and make the Rockets' frontcourt the best in the NBA, but they would not be getting much else in return and would more than likely buy out the other two players included in the deal.

With the NBA draft about to begin, there is another rumor that the Rockets are trying to move into the draft and pick in place of the Thunder or the Grizzlies. In order to pull off this miracle, they would more than certainly have to give up Battier, Scola, and future picks.

If the Rockets pull the trigger on this rumor, I might become a Spurs fan, and I hate the Spurs more than any team in the NBA.

Thinking about this reminds me of the feeling of utter disgust I felt when the Rockets traded four legitimate players, including Kenny Smith and Robert "Big Shot Rob" Horry, for Charles Barkley.

It was a trade that pushed the Rockets to the Western Conference Finals and no further, after winning back-to-back championships.

It is hard for me to imagine any trade that the Rockets would make that I would sign off on. They have formed bonds with each other, and team chemistry is higher than it has been since the mid 90's.

People seem to think the Rockets need to make major moves to be a contender, when the most important moves they should make are within the organization.

Signing Ron Artest and Von Wafer have to be top priorities. Artest proved he can behave and be the leader Tmac is not, and Wafer is a competent scorer off the bench.

The big three in Artest, McGrady, and Yao did not get a chance to prove itself in the 2008-09 season. They deserve a chance to live up to the nickname, especially given the development of the young players.

Ultimately, I am skeptical of any trades the Rockets would potentially make, but if they don't win a championship next season, it might be time for an overhaul. Expectations are running high in Houston.
