NFL Draft 2014: List of Grades for Each Franchise Following Final Results

Sean ODonnellMay 10, 2014

On Saturday, the last of 256 prospects found a home in the NFL, and with that came the conclusion of this year's draft.

After a long offseason filled with scouting reports, player analysis and mock drafts, the 2014 NFL draft seemed to come and go in a blink of an eye. With three long days now in the books, teams will begin to scramble for undrafted free agents to add to their offseason rosters.

While they begin that process, we reflect on the draft's seven rounds. That's right. It's time for draft grades.

Grading the draft is an interesting process, as we won't really know the full impact of each player until well into the season—or possibly a couple of seasons.

What we can do is grade each team on the potential of their new players, position in which they were drafted and their schematic fits.

Let's take a team-by-team look at the draft, highlighting the best and most questionable selections, and give an overall grade for each franchise.

Arizona Cardinals

Best Pick: Deone Bucannon, SS, Washington State

Questionable Pick: Logan Thomas, QB, Virginia Tech

The Cardinals began the draft in a strong way, selecting Bucannon with the 27th selection. Arizona's front office made a great move, trading back to get their coveted prospect. Bucannon is big, fast and strong and should find immediate playing time.

Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports certainly can't wait to see Bucannon in action, according to his tweet:

Selecting Thomas in Round 4 was a rather questionable decision here. With other more polished quarterbacks remaining on the board, Thomas seemed to be a bit of a reach. He's been rather inconsistent throughout his college career and may not be a great fit in Arizona's offensive scheme.

Baltimore Ravens

Best Pick: C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama

Questionable Pick: Lorenzo Taliaferro, RB, Coastal Carolina

It seems each year the Ravens come away with a very nice draft haul. Adding Mosley in the first round and Timmy Jernigan in the second round will give this defense a major boost right away. Both will be great schematic fits and will see plenty of time on the field as rookies.

Pat Forde of Yahoo! Sports tweeted his love with this fit for Baltimore:

The selection of Taliaferro in Round 4 was slightly questionable, as the small school product didn't appear to be the most talented, tested or experienced running back on the board. He'll need some time to find his way in the NFL.

Carolina Panthers

Best Pick: Kony Ealy, DE, Missouri

Questionable Pick: Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State

Selecting Ealy with the 60th pick in the draft was a huge value for the Panthers. Ealy should be able to contribute immediately and bring a speedy presence to Carolina's defensive line rotation.

Ealy's attitude shined through immediately, according to this tweet from the Panthers:

Although the Panthers really needed a wide receiver, selecting Benjamin in Round 1 may not have been the team's best option. Sure. he's a big target, but he also comes with limited upside and questions regarding is work ethic.

Cleveland Browns

Best Pick: Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M

Questionable Pick: Christian Kirksey, OLB, Iowa

The Browns had a stellar draft. After moving down to select Justin Gilbert with the No. 8 selection, the team traded up to select Manziel. Both of these moves secured top-tier prospects in big areas of need for this team.

Bruce Feldman tweeted Gilbert's excitement once he realized Manziel would be joining him in Cleveland:

While Kirksey wasn't a bad selection, other positions of need could have been addressed for the Browns in Round 3. With a questionable wide receiver situation and more secondary help needed, they could have gone one of those routes instead.

Dallas Cowboys

Best Pick: Zack Martin, OT, Notre Dame

Questionable Pick: Anthony Hitchens, OLB, Iowa

Although some Dallas fans didn't like the Martin selection—Manziel was still on the board—this is a great fit for the Cowboys. Martin handled himself nicely as a left tackle at Notre Dame and has the athleticism and versatility to play multiple positions along the offensive line.

The Martin pick was good, but Bleacher Report tweeted the coveted prospect of many Cowboys fans:

Dallas needed a linebacker, and the team grabbed one in Hitchens in Round 4. The fit is nice, as he was very productive while at Iowa, however, the Cowboys appeared to reach for him a bit.
