Sean ODonnellMay 9, 2014

After a wild first round of the 2014 NFL draft, Rounds 2 and 3 followed suit with some more brilliant, surprising and unexpected selections.

The importance of grabbing the right prospects in these rounds is absolutely crucial for every NFL franchise. We've seen teams come away with future Hall of Famers and others simply wind up with bad memories.

We may not know the full extent of this year's selections for quite some time; however, that won't stop us from speculating.

Oakland Raiders

Pick: No. 36

Selection: Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State

Grade: A

This was a very solid selection by the Oakland Raiders.

Oakland waited patiently until its pick in the second round to grab its quarterback of the future. Derek Carr is a natural passer and has a cannon for an arm. He will need some time to develop, but after the acquisition of Matt Schaub over the offseason, Oakland can afford to give it to him.

After all, the Raiders were apparently waiting for Carr this whole time, according to a tweet from ESPN Insider Adam Schefter:

Jacksonville Jaguars

Pick: No. 39

Selection: Marqise Lee, WR, USC

Grade: A+

The Jacksonville Jaguars did exactly what they needed to do here—get Blake Bortles a wide receiver.

With Justin Blackmon looking rather unreliable right now, Bortles needed help in a big way. The Jaguars took the best wide receiver left on the board to give it to him.

Sure, Marqise Lee is a bit of an injury risk; however, there's no denying his talent when he's on the field. He has the skill set to become a true No. 1 option on Jacksonville's offense.

General manager David Caldwell certainly appeared excited about the selection, according to the Jaguars' official Twitter account:

Tennessee Titans

Pick: No. 54

Selection: Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington

Grade: A

The first running back finally came off the board with the 54th selection of the draft.

With a fantastic decision, the Tennessee Titans drafted Bishop Sankey, the Pac-12's rushing leader from 2013. Sankey runs with a very low pad level. He's also instinctive and agile. Not just a rusher, Sankey had reliable hands out of the backfield as well.

Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com tweeted some big praise for Sankey right after his selection:

Washington Redskins

Pick: No. 66

Selection: Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia

Grade: A+

The Washington Redskins haven't had many picks to this point; however, they certainly made this one count.

Morgan Moses is a talented offensive tackle who was given a low-end first-round grade by some analysts. He'll be plugged into Washington's offensive line immediately and help protect Robert Griffin III.

Jeremiah of NFL.com appeared to like the selection, according to his tweet:

St. Louis Rams

Pick: No. 75

Selection: Tre Mason, RB, Auburn

Grade: A

The St. Louis Rams have quite a decent draft haul so far.

Adding the speedy Tre Mason to complement Zac Stacy in the backfield was a move that should pay dividends on this budding offense.

Mason is lightning quick and has better-than-advertised hands out of the backfield. He'll serve as a great change-of-pace running back and double as a dangerous kick returner for St. Louis.

Just how good was Mason while at Auburn? SportsCenter tweeted one telling statistic:

Houston Texans

Pick: No. 83

Selection: Louis Nix III, DT, Notre Dame

Grade: A+

Well, the Houston Texans defensive line just got a whole lot scarier.

We already knew about the dynamic pairing of J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney, but adding Louis Nix III—possibly the draft's most true 3-4 nose tackle—brings this defensive front to a whole other level.

Nix is a stout gap-filler and solid tackler. He could stand to drop a little weight to help with his conditioning and stamina, but there's no doubt he will be an upgrade on a very good defense.

Bleacher Report's Aaron Nagler summed Houston's defensive line up perfectly with this tweet:

It won't be fun to stand across from this defensive line in 2014.
