Coach K Vs. Coach Roy

Mike KlineJun 23, 2009

It has become as engrossing a question as "to be or not to be", or "chicken or fish?"

To some this is a fairly easy question. Duke fans will choose Mike Krzyzewski and University of North Carolina fans will choose Roy Williams.

But what about everyone else.

North Carolina media blew up a story about a survey conducted on the opinions of the two uber-coaches last week. The survey showed that more people had a favorable opinion of O'Roy than of Coach K.

I'm still trying to determine why this was front page news in some papers, and prominent stories on the TV outlets while protests in Iran sit on the back burner with a lack of all-around interest.

Let's face it, UNC has a significant advantage in this state and perhaps nationwide with regard to the size of its fan base. So if that survey included just North Carolina residents, it would stand to reason that Williams would have the edge with regard to popularity and favorable opinion wouldn't it?

Even ESPN.com got into the showdown by putting up a poll questions asking who people would rather have as their coach.

In that one, Coach K reigned supreme, albeit barely.

But other than the rivalry, what would be the determining factor for most people?

The resume's of both coaches are impressive. Krzyzewski has more than 800 wins, three national titles, and multiple conference titles. He also lead the USA National team to Olympic gold this past summer.

That doesn't include all of his other charitable activities or the American Express commercials.

In short, no one can deny Coach K is a good man or coach.

Williams' resume includes two national titles, both in the last five years, and Final Four appearances with two different schools. He is an excellent recruiter and if you believe the sincere good-old-old boy routine, a genuine nice guy too.

Not to mention he coached two of the nation's most premier pregame dancers in recent memory.

All joking aside, can you go wrong with either one?

Both are winners, both are good people and if either one of them coached their rival's school, you would easily see the loyalties of the fans reversed.

So beyond rivalry, it boils down to preference and it would be hard to find too many serious faults with either one.
