Andris Biedrins Is the Key To a Successful Season For the Warriors

Steven ResnickJun 21, 2009

Forget the talk about Monta Ellis being happy in Golden State. The key for the Warriors season to be successful is actually Andris Biedrins.

Biedrins in the 2008-2009 season was enjoying his best season as a pro, until injuries derailed the season, but even with that Biedrins has some room for definite improvements.

Statistically, Biedrins has improved every year since he came into the league.

Here's a look at those stats

  • 2004-2005: 3.6 points per game, 3.9 rebounds, .8 blocks, 2.9 fouls, on 57.7 percent shooting, and 47.5 percent from the free throw line.
  • 2005-2006: 3.8 points per game, 4.2 rebounds, .7 blocks, 2.8 fouls, on 63.8 percent shooting, and 30.6 from the free throw line.
  • 2006-2007: 9.5 points per game, 9.3 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, 3.7 fouls, on 59.9 percent shooting, and 52.1 percent from the free throw line.
  • 2007-2008: 10.5 points per game, 9.8 rebounds, 1.2 blocks, 3.4 fouls, on 62.6 percent shooting, and 62 percent from the free throw line.
  • 2008-2009: 11.9 points per game, 11.2 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, 3.8 fouls, on 57.8 shooting, and 57.8 percent from the free throw line.

The first thing that is noticeable about Biedrins is the propensity for fouls. So, what Biedrins needs to start doing is actually to become more aggressive defensively. This would fix his problems of fouling because most of the fouls that Biedrins got were a result of reacting instead of being aggressive.

The second part of the game that Biedrins needs to work on is to develop some moves down on the block, so he's not always either cleaning up the offensive glass. He needs to actually get into the flow of the game on the offensive side of the ball. Meaning that Biedrins needs to start taking a little bit more shots.

The third is that Biedrins needs to work on his free throw shooting. In his career he's at a 53.2 percent clip, that is another area that he clearly needs to work on.

At the start of the 2009-2010 season, Biedrins will be 23 years old. He's still very young and he can definitely work on those aspects of his game. The being more aggressive, being more involved in the offense, and fixing his free throw percentage.

With these improvements it would help the Warriors tremendously and would help the Warriors have a more successful season then they did in the 2008-09 season.
