Team With the Most to Lose in First Round: Cleveland Browns
Every team with a pick in the first round is under immense pressure to not make a mistake, but there is no franchise in the NFL with as much to lose on the first day of the draft as the Cleveland Browns.
Not only does Cleveland hold the No. 4 overall pick, but the team also holds No. 26 overall.
After finishing the 2013 regular season with a terrible 4-12 record, the Browns have made wholesale changes this offseason. With the departure of players like quarterback Brandon Weeden, safety T.J. Ward and linebacker D'Qwell Jackson, there are areas of serious need across the depth chart.
There is still plenty of talent on Cleveland’s roster, and stars like wide receiver Josh Gordon and tight end Jordan Cameron just need a reliable quarterback who can make plays consistently.
The Browns must take a QB with the No. 4 pick, and there is no better solution than Central Florida’s Blake Bortles. With the raw physical tools to be an instant starter in the NFL and the upside to continue progressing as a player, Bortles would be the franchise’s long-term answer under center.
If Cleveland makes the correct fundamental pick with Bortles, the team will have the chance to address another area of need on the defensive side of the ball with the No. 26 pick.
With the departure of Ward, the lack of a true on-field manager in the secondary will be a major issue for the team.
One of the best safeties in the 2014 class is Louisville’s Calvin Pryor. If he falls to the Browns late in the first round, the team will fill a serious need with the potential star.
The first round is pivotal for many teams, but Cleveland has the unique opportunity to find two quality players who could help instantly turn the tide of the franchise.
