NFL Draft Order 2014: Final 7-Round Predraft Breakdown

Perhaps the only thing fans around the NFL have truly learned during the draft process is to expect the unexpected starting on May 8. The lack of certainty surrounding the draft class should make for quite a spectacle with the potential for numerous surprising selections.

For example, most of the early focus was on the quarterbacks. Not only does it remain the single most important position on the field, but several teams near the top of the draft order need an upgrade. So the expectation was a quarterback-heavy start to the draft.

Alas, Peter King of TheMMQB.com reported in the weeks leading up to draft day that most of those franchises were considering going in another direction in the first round and then grabbing a quarterback later in the draft:

"

I've heard that at least four quarterback-needy teams—Houston (first pick), Jacksonville (3), Cleveland (4) and Oakland (5)—are strongly considering passing on quarterbacks with their first picks and waiting until their second or third selections. Simple reason: They're not in love with any of the quarterbacks, and there are too many other good players who are surer things than a quarterback you have sincere doubts about. For that reason, there could be more quarterbacks taken in round two than round one.

"

In turn, the entire outlook for the opening round changed and some of the top quarterback prospects went from top-10 potential to maybe slipping into Round 2. The opposite was true for coveted players at other positions, who have seen their stocks rise as the quarterbacks fell.

Even Jadeveon Clowney, who's been the most common choice for the top overall prospect in the class, hasn't been free from criticism. Although his athletic ability is off the charts, especially for a player of his size and strength, questions remain about his work ethic.

Although he won't be able to answer those questions until he joins a team and goes through his first full season at the NFL level, he remains confident in himself. David Newton of ESPN passed along comments from the South Carolina defensive end following his pro day:

"

I can pretty much do it all. Anything on defense I can help. I can be a playmaker. I am a playmaker. I've got what it takes, I believe, to go out there and set the tone for the next guy coming up. And to help my team out winning games.

Every team I've ever played with, we've never had a losing season. Never. Before I got there, I watched them lose. Not just here. Back in high school, middle school. I was like, 'Man, that ain't going to be my team when I play on that team.'

"

Clowney joins Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel as the most polarizing prospects in the class. Both players have undeniable playmaking ability and star power, but whether that will translate to long-term success in the NFL is up for debate.

Ultimately, the draft should wind up being seven rounds of intrigue as certain players get selected well before the projections and others slide well beyond when they were expected to come off the board. Every team's task is trying to maximize value amid the chaos.

Above all else, it should make for a very interesting event, which is important when it comes to keeping fans involved for over 250 picks across three days.
