USA v. Egypt: The Aftermath As Well As the Future

Olan EfremJun 21, 2009

After what many would call "against all odds" USA advances to the semifinals of the Confederations Cup 2009.

Here was the situation: USA was to play Egypt on Sunday, Brazil was to play Italy. The combined goal margin victory between USA and Brazil had to be at least siv goals for USA to advance.

Early on in the game against Egypt, the announcers on ESPN dictated the score "2-0" with a Brazil lead over Italy, at the moment, United States was up 1-0 on Egypt.

Time progressed and by half-time, the Brazilians were up 3-0 after an own goal, the United States were still sitting on a 1-0 lead on Egypt. A beautiful through pass to Michael Bradley was then drilled in the back of the net giving the United States a 2-0 lead in the first half of the second half (haha).

All the United States needed was a goal to seal the deal and get a spot in the semifinals. Time progressed, the Brazilians held their three goal lead, the Americans pushed onwards attacking the net from all sides viciously. Finally, a cross came towards the box in which Clint Dempsey met with a head, the ball flew past the Egyptian goalie's flailing hands, and from there... the United States held a 3-0 lead.

After defeating all odds, the United States managed to hold their lead as well as the Brazilians. At the double whistle of the referee, the United States made it into semifinals a very prestigious victory over Egypt in their back pocket.

Next on the list: Spain, number one in the world, a 15-game winning streak as of Saturday. (defeating South Africa, 15 streak if I'm not mistaken)

If the United States continues to play with heart and emotion...would the Spaniards be able to stop them? Will the out of nowhere victory and advancement of the US lead to a new and rejuvenated morale for the American players? Will the US make it to the finals by beating number one in the world and most likely end up rematching the team who defeated them 3-0 earlier in the tournament?

I SURELY can't tell you, all I can do is cross my fingers in support as the United States squares off against Spain. Tune in on ESPN (one of those ESPN channels) at 2:25 eastern time.
