Kentucky Derby Prep Races 2014: Final Results, Prize-Money Earnings and More
Mr Speaker took the win at the Coolmore Lexington Stakes in Lexington, Ky., on Saturday and brought an end to the Kentucky Derby Prep Races.
With just 17 points divided among the top-four finishers, the race had little impact in the standings. California Chrome sits atop those standings with 150 points; you can view the full leaderboard here.
This is the second year the derby has used a points system. The top 20 in the standings know their spot in the grand race is secure, should they want to make a run at the Triple Crown.

Other than the relatively small amount of points awarded in the final race of the series, the points for each race increased as time passed.

Early Look at the Favorites
California Chrome is grabbing lots of attention. As Odds Shark points out, the Art Sherman-trained horse is the early favorite. It's not surprising. The horse has proven to be good and consistent.
He's won his last four stakes races and has done so by a combined 24 lengths. That includes his last race where he captured the Santa Anita Derby by over five lengths. Still, the horse who was a distant second in that race could give California Chrome more than he can handle in Kentucky.
Hoppertunity, trained by Bob Baffert, got off to a slow start in the moderately paced race and then got stuck in traffic for a moment. Still, the horse rallied and made a fine late charge. If he can avoid setbacks early in the Kentucky Derby, don't be surprised to see Hoppertunity make a run at the win.
Another horse that is generating some serious buzz is Wicked Strong. This wasn't the case before the Wood Memorial on April 5. Entering that race, Wicked Strong had not won since breaking his maiden.
At the Wood Memorial, the James Jerkens trainee blazed down the home stretch and won by over three lengths against a strong field that included the previously undefeated Samraat.
Unfortunately, none of these horses will have to worry about Constitution. The Todd Pletcher-trained horse is going to miss the Triple Crown with an injury.
An article in the Miami Herald by SportsNetwork.com provided this Pletcher quote: "This is one of the biggest disappointments of my career. I really feel Constitution was our biggest chance to win the Kentucky Derby since Super Saver."
The absence of one horse will not detract from this race, and if California Chrome gets a less-than-ideal post placement, I expect fairly even odds among the top contenders.
