After All These Years, the Wood Brothers Are Still NASCAR's Best Family
Back in the early 1950's a family that everyone loved, came on to the NASCAR scene and started an organization that would dominate for years to come.
Wood Brothers Racing, started back in 1954 and from 1960-1985, may have been the best team in NASCAR. David Pearson's famous No. 21 Purolator Mercury was as famous as Dale Earnhardt's black No. 3, and they had loads of success.
The Wood Brothers had 93 wins in that time period.
Since that time they have five wins and a Winston (All-Star) victory. Drivers such as Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Junior Johnson, Curtis Turner, Fred Lorenzen, Donnie Allison, Neil Bonnett, Buddy Baker, Kyle Petty, Dale Jarrett, Morgan Shepherd, Michael Waltrip, Elliott Sadler, Ricky Rudd, Ken Schrader, Boris Said and Bill Elliott have all drove a Wood Brothers car one time or another in their career.
All the drivers have said nothing but great things about the organization, and that tradition has continued throughout the years.
Now here we are in 2009, 56 years after The Wood Brothers Racing Team first showed up at Martinsville, and it's just another great thing to add to a wonderful organization—an organization that has done nothing but show class and honesty since they first came here.
In case you haven't heard, The Wood Brothers Racing team will pit for the No. 08 team this weekend at Infineion Raceway—a gesture that has been done by the Wood Brothers before. In 1965, the Wood Brothers pitted a car for Scotsman Jimmy Clark when he won the 1965 Indianapolis 500.
Co-Owner Eddie Wood said the Wood Brothers were happy to pit Said this weekend and that they jumped at the opportunity. The Wood Brothers also said that they are looking to field a car for Said at Watkins Glen, if sponsorship allows them.
A great team and a great organization continuing their ways of helping teams get on their feet. This is why the Wood Brothers need to remain in NASCAR and are considered one of NASCAR's greatest teams.
For acts like this they continue to show the class that makes the fans love the sport of NASCAR. The Wood Brothers are pioneers for the sport of NASCAR and they represent our sport the best way possible.
This classy and great organization is the best in NASCAR!
