Big Changes For The Minnesota Timberwolves?

Tanner JohnsonJun 19, 2009

The new Minnesota Timberwolves GM David Kahn seems to be looking to make a big splash during this years draft/offseason and mold this team from Mchale's team to his team quickly.

He has already fired Mchale and there's been many trade rumors floating around that the Wolves have been involved in.  Here are some examples: Al Jefferson and the #6 pick for Amare Stoudemire, Kevin Love and the #6 for the #2 overall pick, Mike Miller being traded, etc.

The Wolves also have 3 1st rounders this year alone. (#6, #18, #28)  I think Kahn is looking to package 2 of these to move up in the draft because they are probably not going to be taking on 3 rookies + there 2nd rounders.  So they probably won't have all 3 1st rounders by the end of the draft.

Even if they do keep all 3 picks it's wide open to who they will select.  Stephen Curry, Tyreke Evans, James, Harden, Jrue Holliday, Brandon Jennings, Demar Derozen, Jonny Flynn, etc. have all been choices for the Wolves at ONLY the #6 pick in recent mock drafts.  The 18th and 28th selections also have numerous possibilities.

There main needs are a PG who can facilitate the offense and a true center. As for my choices of who they would select at these picks. (without any trades that will likely be made)

At the #6th pick I hope the Timberwolves select Tyreke Evans G out of Memphis.  He is a freakishly tall combo guard who can play the point and push the ball up the court.  He is 6'6 with an almost 7 foot wingspan.  This allows us to have Evans handle the ball on offense and let Foye play SG at which he is better, more effective, and more comfortable with.  Foye can easily guard PG's on defense (He is 6'4) and you can slide
Evans over on D to play against the SG with his freakish athleticism and length he should be able to get lots of steals and blocks against most SG's.

At the 18th pick I would like for the Timberwolves to go with BJ Mullens.  I know he's a project and many people think that he will be a bust, but he is a legit 7 footer and if he does pan out we can really use his size.  Plus it's not like were one piece away from a championship.  Hopefully Mullens can develop at absolute least he can develop into a good rebounder and a defensive stopper.  That's all we really need because we have Big Al and Kevin Love who can both score.

At the #28 assuming no trade I would like the wolves to select a player like Sam Young.  He will not be a star, but is a solid scorer and a good defender and I think he can be a good role player in this league.  He would be great value at #28

I'm looking for the Timberwolves to be major players in this years drafts and hopefully Kahn can prove himself and reverse the Timberwolves horrible drafting luck.  I predict the Wolves roster will look way different then it did under Mchale reign and hopefully this franchise gets turned around and is back in the playoffs within a few years.

This is my first ever article written so any input is welcome.  Thanks for reading!!
