EA Sports UFC: Roster and Feature Reveal Tracker
On June 17, EA Sports will release its first UFC video game. The anticipation is at a fever pitch. From what we've seen, the game looks awesome.
Graphically, it looks on par with NBA 2K14, which is the visual standard-bearer for sports video games on console gaming.
Once the world gets an opportunity to play the game, we'll know for sure if it plays as good as it looks. Until then, keep an eye on this tracker.
I'll be updating the newest screenshots as the huge roster of fighters is revealed weekly. Also, news and information about the gameplay engine, mechanics and the feature set are all coming into focus as well.
Just prior to release, a gameplay demo will also be released. Keep an eye out for an announcement on that as well.
The tracker is arranged to have the most recent news, screenshots and videos appear first. Scroll through to catch up or stay on top of the latest information on this exciting new game.
Not an Annual Release? Free DLC? Yay!
1 of 83
Why is John Dodson so happy?
That's because, per a hands-on preview and discussion with creative director Brian Hayes, UndisputedOline.net is reporting that EA Sports UFC will not be an annual release.
After the first version comes out June 17, the next game won't release for another 18-22 months.
Why is that a good thing?
Because it gives enough time for there to be a significant improvement from one version to the next. Often times, fans of sports video game franchises complain that the next version is simply the equivalent of a roster update.
With nearly two years between releases, that shouldn't be the case.
To add more goodness to this news, we also learned that several fighters, likely including new bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw, will be included as free DLC after release.
Similar updates will continue leading all the way up to the release of the next version. Now that's a beautiful thing.
The only DLC that will incur a cost is if it's a special fighter, etc. Something similar to Bruce Lee, or a younger version of an existing fighter.
UndisputedOnline.net took a few screenshots of their experience, and did a writeup as well.
Here's one of the screenshots from the create-a-fighter mode.

"Nickname: NA
"
Current Record: 19-8-0
From: Waynesburg, PA, USA
Fights Out Of: Fresno, CA, USA
Age: 36
Height: 5’10” (177 cm)
Weight: 170 lbs (77 kg)
Strengths: Wrestling, Athleticism, Former NCAA Champion
How good is this render? The developers couldn't have nailed Koscheck any better. The 36-year-old should be hanging em up at some time in the very near future, but he was a tough hombre in his prime.
He's not a bad pick for those with a more well-rounded game.
Rich Franklin
4 of 83
"Nickname: Ace
"
Current Record: 29-7-0, 1NC
From: Cincinnati, OH, USA
Age: 39
Height: 6’1” (185 cm)
Weight: 185 lbs (84 kg)
Strengths: Excellent Striking Skills, Good Conditioning, Well-Rounded
It's hard to argue Franklin's place in UFC history. He had a remarkable run to the light heavyweight title before being flattened by Anderson Silva.
Still, Franklin should be a lock for the Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, only the hardcore UFC fans will probably give him a second look on the fighter select screen.
T.J. Grant
5 of 83
"Nickname: NA
"
Current Record: 21-5-0
From: Calgary, AB, Canada
Fights out of: Cole Harbour, NS, Canada
Age: 30
Height: 5’10” (177 cm)
Weight: 155 lbs (70 kg)
Strengths: Good Submissions, Well-Rounded, Aggressive, Always Pushing the Fight
Since he came to lightweight, Grant has been a wrecking ball. Injuries have slowed his momentum, but if he returns at the same level, he'll be a force to be reckoned with at 155 pounds.
John Dodson
6 of 83
"Nickname: The Magician
"
Record: 16-6-0
From: Albuquerque, NM, USA
Fights Out Of: Albuquerque, NM, USA
Age: 29
Height: 5’3” (160 cm)
Weight: 125 lbs (56 kg)
Strengths: Speed, Fast Hands and Feet, Explosiveness
Dodson is explosive and jovial all at the same time. He's always smiling, but his punching power at flyweight is impressive. He owns a win over T.J. Dillashaw and others in his career thus far.
I'm not sure how many people will give the lighter weights a look, but Dodson would be my choice if an opponent takes Demetrious Johnson.
Chad Mendes
7 of 83
"Nickname: Money
"
Current Record: 16-1-0
From: Hanford, CA, USA
Fights out of: Sacramento, CA, USA
Age: 29
Height: 5’6” (167 cm)
Weight: 145 lbs (65 kg)
Strengths: Wrestling, Speed, Power
If Jose Aldo didn't exist, Mendes would probably be the featherweight champion. Unfortunately for Mendes, Aldo is very real.
Still, Mendes has a very bright future at 145 pounds, or even as a bantamweight. His explosiveness and wrestling should make him a popular pick with gamers who are rolling with featherweights.
Dennis Siver
8 of 83
"Nickname: NA
"
Current Record: 22-9-0
From: Omsk, Russia
Fights Out Of: Mannheim, Germany
Age: 35
Height: 5’7” (170 cm)
Weight: 145 lbs (65 kg)
Strengths: Punches, Takedown
It's a little disappointing not to see Siver's spinning kicks not listed as part of his strengths. That's one of his signature maneuvers. In any case, the featherweight who bares a striking resemblance to Daniel Craig of 007 fame could be a mildly popular pick.
Mauricio "Shogun" Rua
9 of 83
"Nickname: Shogun
"
Current Record: 22-9-0
From: Curitiba, Brazil
Fights out of: Curitiba, Brazil
Age: 32
Height: 6’1” (185 cm)
Weight: 205 lbs (93 kg)
Strengths: Very Aggressive, Excellent Background in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu, Power
Without question, Shogun is a living legend in the sport. His battles with Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida in the UFC are some of the best in the promotion's history.
After being stopped in his last fight by Henderson, there's a part of me that hopes he hangs up his six-ounce gloves.
He'll get plenty of run amongst gamers.
Pascal Krauss
10 of 83
"Nickname: Panzer
"
Current Record: 11-2-0
From: Breisach, Germany
Fights Out Of: Freiburg, Germany
Age: 27
Height: 6’1” (185 cm)
Weight: 170 lbs (77 kg)
Strengths: Controlled Aggression, Well-Rounded, Intelligent
This German submissions specialist has run into some issues since he made his UFC debut. He's gone only 2-2, including a KO loss in his last fight against Hyun Gyu Lim in his last fight.
He might be one of the least used fighters on the game.
More Screenshots

Along with the ultra awesome image of Bruce Lee above, there's also this new image of Jon Jones.
The closer we get to June 17, the harder it is to see this stuff and not be able to play.
Actual Gameplay: Jose Aldo vs. Anthony Pettis
12 of 83Finally...we get to see full gameplay. This one-round battle between Anthony "Showtime" Pettis and Jose Aldo looks awesome. Take a look at the detail in the renders of Bruce Buffer, Yves Lavigne—and oh yeah, the fighters too.
The pre-fight audio sounds great, but the commentary sounds like it could use some upgrading. We don't know how late of a build this is is, but there are more positives than there are negatives.
Still, we will need to feel the game before we can be a complete judge.
In my Bart Scott voice: can't wait.
Watch Bruce Lee in Action
13 of 83So we already found out Bruce Lee was the mystery character. This video allows us to see him in action, and hear fighters and developers discuss his import on the sport, martial arts culture, and how he plays in the game.
MMA purist or not, this is really cool.
Joseph Benavidez
14 of 83
"Nickname: NA
"
Current Record: 20-4-0
From: San Antonio, TX, USA
Fights Out Of: Sacramento, CA, USA
Age: 29
Height: 5’4” (162 cm)
Weight: 125 lbs (56 kg)
Strengths: Conditioning, Speed
If it weren't for Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson, Benavidez might have already won the flyweight championship.
Johnson has defeated Benavidez twice. The most recent bout ended with a stunning one-punch KO for Johnson. Benavidez bounced back with an impressive win over Tim Elliott to keep himself in the running to finish second to Mighty Mouse again.
Martin Kampmann
15 of 83
"Nickname: The Hitman
Current Record: 20-7-0
From: Aarhus, Denmark
Fights Out Of: Las Vegas, NV, USA
Age: 32
Height: 6’0” (182 cm)
Weight: 170 lbs (77 kg)
Strengths: Knockout Power, Underrated Ground Game, Discipline"
Someone tell me why Kampmann's nickname isn't Agent 47? It's probably some sort of licensing deal. There's no doubting his resemblance to the video game character that stars in the Hitman series, hence the nickname.
Agent 47 just sounds a bit cooler.
Renan Barao
16 of 83
"Nickname: The Baron
Current Record: 34-1-0, 1NC
From: Natal, Brazil
Fights Out Of: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Age: 27
Height: 5’6” (167 cm)
Weight: 135 lbs (61 kg)
Strengths: Submissions, Striking, Training Team"
How long before Barao is regarded as the No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter in the sport? All he does is continue to run through the best fighters at bantamweight. If he and Dominick Cruz can ever get together, Barao could remove all doubt as to who the best 135-pound fighter in the world really is.
Tim Elliott
17 of 83
"Nickname: NA
Current Record: 10-5-1
From: Wichita, KS, USA
Fights Out Of: Lee’s Summit, MO, USA
Age: 27
Height: 5’7” (170 cm)
Weight: 125 lbs (56 kg)
Strengths: Sets a Fast Pace, Good Scrambler, Always Moving Forward"
Things haven't gone too well for Elliott in the UFC. He's lost two in a row and three of his five bouts with the promotion. For what it's worth, everyone he's faced is considered amongst the best at flyweight (John Dodson, Benavidez and Bagautinov).
He has to beat someone elite at some point, though. Well, at least he has cornrows.
Jake Ellenberger
18 of 83
"Nickname: The Juggernaut
"
Current Record: 29-7-0
From: Sparta, Omaha, NE, USA
Fights Out Of: Lake Forest, CA, USA
Age: 29
Height: 5’10” (177 cm)
Weight: 170 lbs (77 kg)
Strengths: Heavy Hands, Granite Chin, Heart, Experience, Well-Rounded
The Juggernaut can punch with the best of them. He's also a very accomplished wrestler. I dare you to fight with him in EA Sports UFC, score a KO win, and not quote the villain of the same name from the X-Men movie.
Clay Guida
19 of 83
- Nickname: The Carpenter
- Record: 31-11-0
- From: Round Lake, IL, USA
- Fights Out Of: Albuquerque, NM, USA
- Age: 32
- Height: 5’7” (170 cm)
- Weight: 145 lbs (65 kg)
- Strengths: Wrestling, Solid Chin, Flexibility, Endurance
Guida's run might be about over, but he has still established himself as a legend in the sport. The "L" word can't be used in respects to his accomplishments, he's never been a champion.
He's more like the Arturo Gatti of the UFC. A fighter with limited skills, who puts on spectacular shows of resiliency and heart.
Jim Miller
20 of 83
- Nickname: NA
- Record: 24-4-0, 1NC
- From: Sparta, NJ, USA
- Fights Out Of: Whippany, NJ, USA
- Age: 30
- Height: 5’8” (172 cm)
- Weight: 155 lbs (70 kg)
- Strengths: Submissions, Cardio, Wrestling
Oh my God, what a render. Almost every fighter we've seen in EA Sports UFC looks awesome, but this one might be the best.
Everything from the hair follicles to Miller's short neck is captured accurately.
For gamers looking for a tough, well-rounded fighter to start off with, Miller might be a smart choice. He's not the biggest striker, but he shouldn't be a slouch in those respective ratings.
His grappling and stamina game should be on point.
Phil Davis
21 of 83
- Nickname: Mr. Wonderful
- Record: 12-2-0 1NC
- From: Harrisburg, PA, USA
- Fights Out Of: San Diego, CA, USA
- Age: 29
- Height: 6’2” (187 cm)
- Weight: 205 lbs (93 kg)
- Strengths: Wrestling
Not much was wonderful about Davis' fight against Anthony "Rumble" Johnson at UFC 172, but he's still one of the sport's best grapplers.
He failed to take Rumble to the mat, and was systematically dismantled in the stand-up game.
He's going to have a steep hill to climb to get back into title contention at light heavyweight. The timing of the loss probably isn't too good for his prospects in the video game either.
Gamers aren't likely to gravitate to a guy who just got the breaks beat off of him in a recent pay-per-view.
Career Mode and Online Trailer
22 of 83On Wednesday, April 30, EA Sports dropped the trailer above to introduce the career mode in EA Sports UFC.
As previously confirmed in my interview with creative director Brian Hayes, gamers can use the GameFace technology to upload their face into the game for use with their character.
There's several details released within the video, but perhaps the most intriguing aspect is the longevity rating.
If your created fighter fights a reckless style, don't expect him to have a long career. The game is apparently taking into consideration the toll brutal battles have on a fighter long term.
That's pretty realistic.
Royce Gracie Will Be Unlockable Character Through Pre-Order
23 of 83
Bruce Lee isn't the only martial arts legend who will be playable in EA Sports UFC. The man most responsible for the rise of the sport in the United States, Royce Gracie will be available as a bonus to fans who pre-order, per EA Sports.
If you're over the age of 25 and you've heard of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, chances are Gracie or someone in his legendary family introduced you to the discipline.
Gracie won UFC 1, 2 and 4 back when the promotion's events were one-day tournaments.
His name is to Jiu-Jitsu, what Vince Lombardi's is to football. Having him as a playable character is awesome.
Exclusive Interview with Creative Director Brian Hayes
24 of 83On Wednesday, I had an opportunity to speak to Brian Hayes, the creative director for EA Sports UFC. While there were some details he couldn't discuss about the game, he did talk about the reaction to Bruce Lee's inclusion.
He also talked about the methodology behind the one-strike KO, the Fight Night series and more.
Take a listen to the interview. It also features screenshots of every fighter who has been revealed to date.
Travis Browne
25 of 83
"Nickname: Hapa
"
Current Record: 16-1-1
From: Honolulu, Hawaii, USA
Fights Out Of: Albuquerque, N.M., USA
Age: 31
Height: 6’7” (200 cm)
Weight: 255 lbs (115 kg)
Strengths: Striking, Well-Rounded Ground Game, Size
Mark 'Hapa' down as one of the heavyweights you must test out on Day 1 with the game. At 6'7" with explosive striking and great ground-and-pound, Browne could be devastating in the hands of an experienced gamer.
Can he be that dangerous at UFC 171 against Fabricio Werdum?
Khabib Nurmagomedov
26 of 83
"Nickname: The Eagle
"
Current Record: 21-0-0
From: Dagestan, Russia
Fights Out Of: Dagestan, Russia
Age: 25
Height: 5’10” (177 cm)
Weight: 155 lbs (70 kg)
Strengths: Wrestling
Here's a bold statement. There isn't a brighter star, 25 years or younger, in the UFC than Nurmagomedov. He's a spectacular wrestler, good striker and he has excellent cardio.
I truly believe there's a world title in his future. As a matter of fact, come June 17, I'm going to make it one of my goals to capture some gold with the Eagle.
In real life, Nurmagomedov is set to take on Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 171 in Orlando, Fla.
Liz Carmouche
27 of 83
"Nickname: Girl-Rilla
"
Current Record: 8-4-0
From: Lafeyette, La., USA
Fights Out Of: San Diego, Calif., USA
Age: 30
Height: 5’6” (167 cm)
Weight: 135 lbs (61 kg)
Strengths: Power, Takedowns, Ground and Pound
His a bit of reality as we prepare to engage in a bit of virtual reality. Carmouche really needs to beat Miesha Tate at UFC 171. If she doesn't, the only way we may see her in a UFC Octagon is in the game.
Carmouche hasn't won a fight in the UFC. She and Tate are both in must-win situations come Saturday, April 19.
Michael Bisping
28 of 83
"Nickname: The Count
"
Current Record: 25-5-0
From: Manchester, England
Fights Out Of: Manchester, England
Age: 35
Height: 6’2” (187 cm)
Weight: 185 lbs (84 kg)
Strengths: Striking, Cardio
Bisping again failed to win a big fight at the TUF Nations Finale. Everything about him seems to suggest he should be a legitimate title threat at 185 pounds. For whatever reason, he can't produce when he's on the cusp.
Oh well, at least his render in the game is cool.
UFC Fight Night 39: Main Event Faceoff
29 of 83
Antonio "Minotauro" Nogueira and "Big Country" Roy Nelson were the featured attraction at UFC Fight Night 39 in Abu Dhabi.
With one-punch KOs active in the game, gamers have a chance to land a bomb with Big Country to re-enact his win over "Big Nog."
Or you could change recent history. Though it might be difficult, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend could wrap Nelson up for a submission in the cyber rematch.
Perhaps Nelson's beard may have a touch more gray in it, and his stomach needs a little more heft. But the two heavyweights look lifelike in the video game.
Bruce Lee Is the Mystery Fighter
30 of 83Weeks ago, EA Sports started dropping some obvious clues that the "Mystery Fighter" included in the game would be the legendary Bruce Lee.
Some hardcore MMA fans haven't taken to the way EA Sports and the UFC are honoring Lee.
Bleacher Report's very own MMA expert Jonathan Snowden tweeted:
"The UFC was created to destroy nonsense ideas about what fighting is and looks like. Ideas perpetuated by the films of people like Bruce Lee."
Snowden does say he doesn't really care that Lee is in the game, but he has a problem with him being called the "father of MMA."
I like the overall idea. This is a video game, which essentially is on par with a movie in my book.
Sure, I want it to be as realistic as possible, but as a hardcore fan of Lee and MMA, you won't get any complaints from me.
The video above also delivers some impressive sequences of gameplay and the official release date.
The Cover
31 of 83
On April 6, the official cover for EA Sports UFC was revealed. Light heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones and the biggest threat to his throne "The Mauler" Alexander Gustafsson grace the box.
Will we ever see a rematch of their classic bout from 2013?
Fans can only hope.
Roy Nelson
32 of 83
Nickname: Big Country
Current Record: 20-9-0
From: Las Vegas, Nev., USA
Fights Out Of: Las Vegas, Nev., USA
Age: 37
Height: 6’0” (182 cm)
Weight: 263 lbs (119 kg)
Strengths: Grappling, World-Class Experience, KO Power
Nelson may look like an everyman, but not many people are as deadly with their hands and as effective as wrestlers.
Because of his distinct appearance and big striking power, count him as one of the fighters that gamers will be drawn to control.
Glover Teixeira
33 of 83
Nickname: NA
Current Record: 22-2-0
From: Sobralia, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Fights Out Of: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Age: 34
Height: 6’2” (187 cm)
Weight: 205 lbs (93 kg)
Strengths: Striking, Jiu-Jitsu
Teixeira vs. Jones is the next big fight on tap in the UFC.
On April 26, the Brazilian will get his chance to dethrone the champ. That fight doesn't look spectacular on paper, but you never know how it'll transpire once the men step in the Octagon.
Teixeira's render captures the facial machinations available in the game and his low-sitting ears.
Mark Munoz
34 of 83
Nickname: The Filipino Wrecking Machine
Current Record: 13-4-0
From: Vallejo, Calif., USA
Fights Out Of: Lake Forest, Calif., USA
Age: 36
Height: 6’0” (182 cm)
Weight: 185 lbs (84 kg)
Strengths: Wrestling, Muay Thai, Former NCAA Wrestling Champion
Munoz might have the best nickname in MMA. Then again, that's easy, considering there are athletes named "Uncle Creepy," "The Mauler" and "All-American."
At 36 years old, Munoz's best days are in the rearview mirror. Speaking of what's behind him, take a look at that crowd.
This might be a bit premature, but this game may have the best-looking crowd in any sports video game.
Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza
35 of 83
Nickname: Jacare
Current Record: 20-3-0, 1NC
From: Espiritos Santos, Brazil
Fights Out Of: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Age: 34
Height: 6’1” (185 cm)
Weight: 185 lbs (84kg)
Strengths: Submissions, Takedowns, Power
Though he's relatively new to the UFC, Souza already has a distinguished career in MMA.
The render nails his jutting chin and cold, hard stare.
Dominick Cruz
36 of 83
Nickname: N/A
Current Record: 19-1-0
From: San Diego, Calif., USA
Fights Out Of: San Diego, Calif., USA
Age: 29
Height: 5’8” (172 cm)
Weight: 135 lbs (61 kg)
Strengths: Conditioning and Punching Power
It's been so long since I actually saw Cruz fight, I had forgotten what he looked like. Thanks goes out to EA Sports for reminding us.
Injuries have sidetracked his career, but as of early March, Cruz was back in the gym to train for a return to the Octagon. Still, this might be the closest anyone gets to seeing him fight for a while.
Josh Thomson
37 of 83
Nickname: The Punk
Current Record: 20-6-0, 1NC
From: San Jose, Calif., USA
Fights Out Of: San Jose, Calif., USA
Age: 35
Height: 5’10” (177 cm)
Weight: 155 lbs (70 kg)
Strengths: Cardio, Attitude
It doesn't seem like it, but Thomson is 35 years old. "The Punk" has been around for a while but doesn't get the type of attention many fighters with his level of experience receive.
Despite his record and skill, you can bet he'll be one of the least used fighters on the game online.
Nate Diaz
38 of 83
Nickname: NA
Current Record: 18-9-0
From: Stockton, Calif., USA
Fights Out Of: Stockton, Calif., USA
Age: 28
Height: 6’0” (182 cm)
Weight: 155 lbs (70 kg)
Strengths: Boxing, Jiu Jitsu, Heart
Paul Heyman once told me the Diaz brothers would be great in the WWE. It makes sense. Nate Diaz's persona is like Roddy Piper and Tito Ortiz somehow meshed their spirits.
Translation: He's good for the sport and excellent for the game's roster.
Dan Henderson
39 of 83
Nickname: Hendo
Current Record: 31-11-0
From: Downey, Calif., USA
Fights Out Of: Temecula, Calif., USA
Age: 43
Height: 6’1” (185 cm)
Weight: 205 lbs (93 kg)
Strengths: Mental Attitude, Wrestling, Knockout Power in Both Hands
Hendo's win over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in March saved his career. It's probably the reason he's appearing in the game as an active fighter and not as a legend.
We'll see how his post-TRT career goes. If he can continue to win, he'll further solidify his place in the sport's history.
Miesha Tate
40 of 83
Nickname: Cupcake
Current Record: 13-5-0
From: Tacoma, Wash., USA
Fights Out Of: Yakima, Wash., USA
Age: 27
Height: 5’6” (167 cm)
Weight: 135 lbs (61 kg)
Strengths: Submission Wrestling
I love "Cupcake," despite the fact that she's yet to conquer her biggest rival Ronda Rousey. Her render is especially impressive because video games have notoriously struggled to accurately recreate women.
From the looks of Tate, EA Sports has that problem under control.
Ian McCall
41 of 83
Nickname: Uncle Creepy
Current Record: 12-4-1
From: Newport Beach, Calif., USA
Fights Out Of: Irvine, Calif., USA
Age: 29
Height: 5’5” (165 cm)
Weight: 125 lbs (56 kg)
Strengths: Sets a Fast Pace, Explosiveness, Ground and Pound
Imagine John L Sullivan and Travis Barker somehow had a descendant—something tells me he'd look like McCall. The render awesomely captures his distinctive mustache, hairstyle and tattoos.
Notice how more narrow McCall's shoulders are when compared to the fighters from bigger weight classes. That's a small detail, but it adds to the overall quality.
Gameplay Developer Diary
42 of 83The "Feel the Fight" developer diary shows off the impressive body-deformation effects that occurs during the bouts.
Several fighters who have already been revealed appear in action. The more we see action from the game, the more free-flowing it looks.
The series executive producer Brian Hayes handles the narration. This is a sizzle trailer, but it's hard to find anything wrong with the gameplay in the video.
Brian Hayes Q&A
43 of 83
Hayes answered a bevy of questions from fans on the EA Sports Forums on March 27. Here's a few of the questions and answers:
"How many possible KO animations are there? Is it possible to KO someone from any position in the octagon?
There are some ground positions where a KO isn’t possible, for example, if you are postured down in full guard you’re not going to be getting enough power on your strikes to put somebody out. And some positions in the clinch, for example if you have double unders, you’re not going to KO your opponent with knees to the legs or shoulder shots.
Does every single submission have to go through a multi stage mini game or are there such things as I guess "flash" submissions?
Every submission goes through some stages – the number of stages can vary.

Age: 27
Height: 5’10” (177 cm)
Weight: 155 lbs (70 kg)
Strengths: Excellent Standup, Strong Ground Game, Creativity
After seeing the preliminary videos that showed the infamous Showtime kick, everyone must want to fight with Pettis when they get their hands on the game.
He is one of the most dynamic stars in the sport and a fighter who is perfect for a video game roster.
Fabricio Werdum
45 of 83
Nickname: Vai Cavalo
Current Record: 17-5-1
From: Porto Alegre, Brazil
Fights Out Of: Los Angeles, CA, USA
Age: 36
Height: 6’4” (193 cm)
Weight: 239 lbs (108 kg)
Strengths: Ground Game
Gamers will have to master the ground game to get any enjoyment out of playing with Werdum. His style isn't the most thrilling unless you have a passion for grappling, but it's hard to argue with his resume.
Wins over Fedor Emelianenko, Minotauro, Roy Nelson, Gabriel Gonzaga, Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva and others validate Werdum's excellence.
Gegard Mousasi
46 of 83
Nickname: NA
Current Record: 34-4-2
From: The Netherlands
Fights Out Of: Leiden, The Netherlands
Age: 28
Height: 6’1” (185 cm)
Weight: 185 lbs (84 kg)
Strengths: Well-rounded
Mousasi lacks star power in real life, but that's the beauty of video games. You can give him the persona he lacks in the Octagon. Notice the more narrow shoulders and longer arms.
It seems the game has accurately captured his 76" reach.
Johny Hendricks
47 of 83
Nickname: Bigg Rigg
Current Record: 16-2-0
From: Ada, Okla., USA
Fights Out Of: Dallas, Texas, USA
Age: 30
Height: 5’9” (175 cm)
Weight: 170 lbs (77 kg)
Strengths: Elite Wrestling, Power
I'm almost convinced Hendricks and Damien Sandow of the WWE are related in some way. The fact that this render looks like the Intellectual Savior of the Unwashed Masses further demonstrates how accurate the fighter recreations are.
Big-time power and strong wrestling should make Hendricks a popular choice for gamers.
Carlos Condit
48 of 83
Nickname: The Natural Born Killer
Current Record: 29-8-0
From: Albuquerque, N.M., USA
Fights Out Of: Albuquerque, N.M., USA
Age: 29
Height: 6’2” (187 cm)
Weight: 170 lbs (77 kg)
Strengths: Striking, Submissions, Endurance
Call me crazy or an Oliver Stone fan, but Condit has the best nickname in the sport. His versatile game and his length should make him a great choice for gamers.
He'll be one of the first guys I select when I get my hands on the game.
Junior Dos Santos
49 of 83
Nickname: Cigano
Current Record: 16-3-0
From: Santa Catarina, Brazil
Fights Out Of: Salvador, Bahia Brazil
Age: 30
Height: 6’4” (193 cm)
Weight: 238 lbs (108 kg)
Strengths: Boxing, Strength, KO Power
If you're a fan of the heavyweights and big strikers, Dos Santos is probably going to get heavy usage on your console.
I'll be sure to test out the one-punch KOs with "Cigano." Perhaps I'll see if I can recreate the result of his first meeting with Cain Velasquez.
Lyoto Machida
50 of 83
Nickname: The Dragon
Current Record: 21-4-0
From: Salvador, Brazil
Fights Out Of: Los Angeles, CA, USA
Age: 35
Height: 6’1” (185 cm)
Weight: 185 lbs (84 kg)
Strengths: Karate, Unorthodox Style, Speed
It seems fitting that a martial artist with the nickname "The Dragon" would be a playable fighter in a game that has Bruce Lee as an unlockable character.
Because of Machida's exciting array of striking techniques, he should offer a good amount of excitement for gamers. It'll be interesting to see how many weight classes he's available in.
Francis Carmont
51 of 83
Nickname: Limitless
Current Record: 22-7-0
From: Paris, France
Fights Out Of: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Age: 32
Height: 6’3” (190 cm)
Weight: 185 lbs (84 kg)
Strengths: Striking
After watching what Carmont did to Costas Philippou in Sept. 2013, it seemed as if "Limitless" was about to blow up.
His loss to Jacare in February halted the rise of his stock, though. Still, he's a dangerous and scary middleweight who could still be a contender down the road.
Benson Henderson
52 of 83
Nickname: Smooth
Current Record: 20-3-0
From: Colorado Springs, Colo., USA
Fights Out Of: Glendale, Ariz., USA
Age: 30
Height: 5’9” (175 cm)
Weight: 155 lbs (70 kg)
Strengths: Wrestling, Good Submissions, Ground and Pound
With one of the more distinctive looks in the UFC, Henderson is one of the guys that fans will want to see in all his next-gen glory.
Jason Nawara of MiddleEasy.com published a firsthand impression from a pre-alpha showing. He mentioned that in the game, Henderson continually brushes the hair from his face, just like he does in real life.
Awesome.
Robbie Lawler
53 of 83
Nickname: Ruthless
Current Record: 22-10-0, 1NC
From: San Diego, Calif., USA
Fights Out Of: Coconut Creek, Fla., USA
Age: 31
Height: 5’10” (180 cm)
Weight: 170 lbs (77 kg)
Strengths: Power, Hand Speed, Takedown Defense
There needs to be a rematch between Lawler and Hendricks down the road. I'll settle for doing it on EA Sports UFC, but I'll need to see those two warriors go at it again.
Lawler is a beast and should be an oft-used fighter in the game as well.
Ronda Rousey
54 of 83
Nickname: Rowdy
Current Record: 9-0-0
From: Riverside, Calif., USA
Fights Out Of: Venice, Calif., USA
Age: 27
Height: 5’7” (170 cm)
Weight: 135 lbs (61 kg)
Strengths: Takedowns, Submissions, Explosiveness, Olympic Experience
Love her or hate her, Rousey is perhaps the biggest star in the sport today. If for no other reason but sheer curiosity, almost every gamer will want to see what she looks like in the game.
No, female fighters will not be able to fight the men, per Zeus at Middle Easy.
Gilbert Melendez
55 of 83
Nickname: El Nino
Current Record: 22-3-0
From: Santa Ana, Calif., USA
Fights Out Of: San Francisco, Calif., USA
Age: 31
Height: 5’9” (175 cm)
Weight: 155 lbs (70 kg)
Strengths: Ground and Pound, Cardio, Transitions
After his war with Diego Sanchez, Melendez's popularity spiked. Everyone in the know was already aware of "El Nino's" skills, but you didn't have to be a hardcore MMA fan to appreciate Melendez vs. Sanchez.
I can't see his back, but I wonder if the game has that weird protruding bone on his back/shoulder.
UFC 170 Faceoff
56 of 83
Both Rory MacDonald and Demian Maia are masterfully rendered. The two produced the best fight of UFC 170 as well.
What stands out in this shot is the height disparity, which looks just about perfect. Also notice MacDonald's head has more density as well.
Hopefully, the physics engine is on point enough for little things like that to matter during combat.
Rory MacDonald
57 of 83
Nickname: Ares
Current Record: 16-2-0
From: Quesnel, British Columbia, Canada
Fights Out Of: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Age: 24
Height: 6’0” (182 cm)
Weight: 170 lbs (77 kg)
Strengths: Striking, Submissions
Still just 24 years old, MacDonald seems to have had a full career already. He still has a good number of solid years left to chase a UFC title.
The render is amazingly accurate. The cold, hard stare captures his Octagon demeanor very well.
Has anyone ever seen MacDonald laugh?
Demian Maia
58 of 83
Nickname: NA
Current Record: 18-6-0
From: Sao Paulo, Brazil
Fights Out Of: Sao Paulo, Brazil
Age: 36
Height: 6’0” (182 cm)
Weight: 170 lbs (77 kg)
Strengths: Submissions, BBJ Black Belt, BBJ World Champion
If Maia could strike, he'd probably be undefeated in the UFC. He's perhaps the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu artist in recent memory.
Because he doesn't have heavy or fast hands, his game lacks balance. He's still a good choice if you want to test the game's grappling engine.
Mark Hunt
59 of 83
Nickname: Super Samoan
Current Record: 9-8-1
From: South Auckland, New Zealand
Fights Out Of: Sydney, Australia
Age: 39
Height: 5’10” (177 cm)
Weight: 265 lbs (120 kg)
Strengths: Resilience, Ability to Adapt, Power
Even after months to reflect, Hunt's battle with Antonio Silva was one of the greatest MMA battles I've ever seen. Even if Hunt had lost, his stock amongst MMA fans would have risen.
Since they fought to a draw, his legend grew even more.
Hunt is like the modern day Tank Abbott, and that's great for a video game.
Cain Velasquez
60 of 83
Nickname: NA
Current Record: 13-1-0
From: Yuma, Ariz., USA
Fights Out Of: San Jose, Calif., USA
Age: 31
Height: 6’1” (185 cm)
Weight: 240 lbs (109 kg)
Strengths: Well Rounded, Takedowns, Power
There's something about being the heavyweight champion. It kinda means you're the baddest man in the world. Velasquez is that man right now.
It'll be fun to see how dominant an experienced gamer can be with Velasquez on the ground.
Brad Pickett
61 of 83
Nickname: One Punch
Current Record: 24-8-0
From: East London, England
Fights Out Of: Coconut Creek, Fla., USA
Age: 35
Height: 5’6” (167 cm)
Weight: 125 lbs (56 kg)
Strengths: Boxing, Striking, Heart
Pickett's nickname is "One Punch," but he's only won two fights via punches in the last six-plus years. At one point in his career, he was quite the striker.
Now he's more of a grinder.
Still, he should be a fun fighter to control in the flyweight division.
Fighter Likenesses
62 of 83If you're wondering how the fighters were created so accurately, this video shows the technology that brought the warriors to life.
The 360-degree camera process has become standard for rendering models in video games on next-generation systems.
It's hard to imagine models could get even more realistic in the future.
In the video below, Hayes talks with VG 247 about a few tidbits in a rapid-fire Q&A:
Scott Jorgensen
63 of 83
Nickname: Young Guns
Current Record: 14-7-0
From: Payson, Utah, USA
Fights Out Of: Boise, Idaho, USA
Age: 31
Height: 5’4” (162 cm)
Weight: 125 lbs (56 kg)
Strengths: Outstanding Wrestling, Great Conditioning, Very Aggressive
Jorgensen is one of those exciting fighters who never seem to grab the big win. Still his distinctive look is captured well in this render.
The developers even captured the fact that his vitiligo has been allowed to "run rampant," per Jorgensen, who spoke to Ben Fowlkes of MMA Junkie about his condition.
Essentially it has evened out his skin tone. Most people assumed the skin condition had been cured. In fact, it was the exact opposite.
Cub Swanson
64 of 83
Nickname: NA
Current Record: 20-5-0
From: Palm Springs, Calif., USA
Fights Out Of: Albuquerque, N.M., USA
Age: 30
Height: 5’7” (170 cm)
Weight: 145 lbs (65 kg)
Strengths: Ground Game, Scrambling, Jiu-Jitsu Background
Swanson looks like an antihero from a soon-to-be released movie by Guy Ritchie. Translation: He's really cool.
This render is awesome from the tats to the shaved-head shadow.
Frank Mir
65 of 83
Nickname: NA
Current Record: 16-9-0
From: Las Vegas, Nev., USA
Fights Out Of: Las Vegas, Nev., USA
Age: 34
Height: 6’3” (190 cm)
Weight: 240 lbs (109 kg)
Strengths: Great Submissions, Improved Striking, Two-Time Heavyweight Champion
How many people can say they beat Pete Williams, Tim Sylvia, Brock Lesnar, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (twice), Mirko Crop Cop and Roy Nelson?
No one.
That said, Mir has lost four fights in a row. The only wins he might experience moving forward are in the game.
He's still a future Hall of Famer.
Ricardo Lamas
66 of 83
Nickname: The Bully
Current Record: 13-3-0
From: Chicago, Ill., USA
Fights Out Of: Chicago, Ill., USA
Age: 31
Height: 5’8” (172 cm)
Weight: 145 lbs (65 kg)
Strengths: Explosiveness, Power
Until he met Lamas' elbows, I thought Erik Koch was headed for stardom. Lamas' vicious defeat of Koch is what made me take notice.
He did lose to Jose Aldo, but with "Scarface" potentially moving up in weight, Lamas might be able to capture the crown at 145 pounds.
Jose Aldo
67 of 83
Nickname: Junior
Current Record: 24-1-0
From: Manaus, Brazil
Fights Out Of: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Age: 27
Height: 5’7” (170 cm)
Weight: 145 lbs (65 kg)
Strengths: Very Strong Ground Game, Knockout Power, Stamina
Quite simply, Aldo is one of the best fighters in the world, if not the best. He has very few, if any, weaknesses. What's crazy is that he's only 27 years old.
Who won't want to control him in the game?
He's potentially moving up to 155 pounds, so a new set of challenges could be in store. No official word on whether Aldo will be usable at lightweight.
Cung Le
68 of 83
Nickname: N/A
Record: 9-2-0
From: Saigon, Vietnam
Fights Out Of: San Jose, Calif., USA
Age: 41
Height: 5’10” (177 cm)
Weight: 185 lbs (84 kg)
Strengths: Striking, Takedowns
Le is a mixed martial arts legend, despite not accomplishing much as a UFC fighter. He had some awesome battles in Strikeforce against the likes of Frank Shamrock and Scott Smith.
Because he hasn't fought since 2012, it'll be interesting to see how accurate his fighting style is in the game.
Joe Lauzon
69 of 83
Nickname: J-Lau
Record: 23-10-0
From: Brockton, Mass., USA
Fights Out Of: Bridgewater, Mass., USA
Age: 29
Height: 5’10” (177 cm)
Weight: 155 lbs (70 kg)
Strengths: Submissions
Few fighters have had as many thrilling fights as Lauzon. He's been in five Fight of the Nights, and he's collected 12 Fight Night bonuses in his career.
He's another fighter who can help you learn the submission game. The render is scary good for Lauzon. His ears are even on point, complete with the cauliflower effect.
Mike Easton
70 of 83
Nickname: The Hulk
Current Record: 13-4-0
From: Washington, D.C., USA
Fights Out Of: Camp Springs, MD, USA
Age: 29
Height: 5’6” (167 cm)
Weight: 135 lbs (61 kg)
Strengths: Unbelievable standup, excellent on the ground
Is it me, or does Easton look like a miniature Dwight Howard here? It's odd but still an accurate render nonetheless.
I've expected more from Easton than he's produced lately. But he has big-time punching power, which should make him exciting to control in the game.
Donald Cerrone
71 of 83
Nickname: Cowboy
Current Record: 22-6-0, 1NC
From: Denver, Colo., USA
Fights Out Of: Albuquerque, N.M, USA
Age: 30
Height: 6’0” (182 cm)
Weight: 155 lbs (70 kg)
Strengths: Striking, Submissions, Muay Thai
I can't wait to see Cerrone's walk to the Octagon in the game. The level of authenticity is so high, I'm almost sure he will don his trademark hat.
His dynamic head-kick KO of Adriano Martins at UFC on Fox in January proved "Cowboy" is still a formidable lightweight.
Chuck Liddell
72 of 83
Nickname: The Iceman
Record: 21-8-0
From: Santa Barbara, CA, USA
Age: 44
Height: 6’2” (187 cm)
Weight: 205 lbs (93 kg)
Strengths: Excellent Striker, Well-Rounded Grappler
No fighter past or present was more important than Liddell to the commercialization of the UFC. He was tough and devastating as a striker and had a signature look.
Some might not like roster slots being occupied by retired legends, but Liddell's presence is a must.
Erik Perez
73 of 83
Nickname: Goyito
Current Record: 13-5-0
From: Monterrey, Mexico
Fights Out Of: Albuquerque, N.M., USA
Age: 23
Height: 5’8” (172 cm)
Weight: 135 lbs (61 kg)
Strengths: Striking
Perez flies under the radar at bantamweight in the UFC, but few can deny his potential. He's only 23 years old, so he still has time to make a move toward a title shot at 135 pounds.
Check out the giant screen in the background of the image. You can actually see every move of the fight on that screen in the game.
Forrest Griffin
74 of 83
Nickname: NA
Record: 19-7-0
From: Columbus, Ohio, USA
Fights Out Of: Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
Age: 34
Height: 6’3” (190 cm)
Weight: 205 lbs (93 kg)
Strengths: Well rounded, Good Grappling Skills, Heart
Griffin had a borderline Hall of Fame career. He may be most famous for being on the business end of one of Anderson Silva's most spectacular knockouts.
He does own wins over Tito Ortiz (twice), Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Stephan Bonnar and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.
Chan Sung Jung
75 of 83
Nickname: The Korean Zombie
Current Record: 13-4-0
From: Po-Hang, South Korea
Fights Out Of: Seoul, South Korea
Age: 26
Height: 5’7” (170 cm)
Weight: 145 lbs (65 kg)
Strengths: Punching Power, Granite Jaw, Aggressiveness
Jung is another fighter with an awesome nickname. What's even better is that his fighting style actually fits his moniker.
With facial damage playing such a major role in the game, it's going to be interesting to see how Jung's chin and ability to absorb damage are conveyed.
Costas Philippou
76 of 83
Nickname: N/A
Current Record: 12-4-0, 1NC
From: Limassol, Cyprus
Fights Out Of: Long Island, N.Y., USA
Age: 34
Height: 5’11” (180 cm)
Weight: 185 lbs (84 kg)
Strengths: Striking
This is an awesome render, but I'm afraid Philippou's time as a serious contender might be over.
He's lost his last two fights and was dominated in both. Carmont simply beat him up, and Luke Rockhold knocked him out with a kick to the body.
Did I mention this is an awesome render?
Demetrious Johnson
77 of 83
Nickname: Mighty Mouse
Current Record: 19-2-1
From: Madisonville, Ky., USA
Fights Out Of: Parkland, Wash., USA
Age: 27
Height: 5’3” (160 cm)
Weight: 125 lbs (56 kg)
Strengths: Speed, Conditioning and Technique
It's a shame people don't appreciate the smaller weight classes. Johnson is a phenomenal fighter. He should be the fastest fighter in the game.
Against Joseph Benavidez, he proved he has one-punch KO power to go with the blinding speed.
I'll put him on my list of fighters I can't wait to control.
Minotauro Nogueira
78 of 83
Nickname: Minotauro
Current Record: 34-8-1, 1NC
From: Bahia, Brazil
Fights Out Of: Gardena, Calif., USA
Age: 37
Height: 6’3” (190 cm)
Weight: 240 lbs (109 kg)
Strengths: Stamina, Great Jiu-Jitsu and Boxing Skills
Nogueira is the only man to hold both the PRIDE and UFC heavyweight titles. No matter what happens from here on out, he'll be in the UFC Hall of Fame.
Nostalgic gamers will get a kick out of playing with this legendary jiu-jitsu artist.
Rashad Evans
79 of 83
Nickname: Suga
Current Record: 24-3-1
From: Niagara Falls, N.Y., USA
Fights Out Of: Boca Raton, Fla., USA
Age: 34
Height: 5’11” (180 cm)
Weight: 205 lbs (93 kg)
Strengths: Takedowns, Takedown Defense, Speed
Suga's KO of Liddell at UFC 88 is still one of the most stunning knockouts ever. I can't wait to see him return to the Octagon and make another run at the light heavyweight title.
If Jones is still the champion, he'll likely run into more elbows. But Evans' combination of speed and wrestling is rare in the sport.
Chael Sonnen
80 of 83
Nickname: The American Gangster
Current Record: 29-14-1
From: Milwaukee, Ore., USA
Fights Out Of: West Linn, Ore., USA
Age: 36
Height: 6’1” (185 cm)
Weight: 205 lbs (93 kg)
Strengths: Excellent Wrestler, Constant Pressure, Stamina
How can a man who has never won a UFC title be one of the promotion's most popular fighters of all time? It's easy: "The American Gangster" has mic skills on par with the most skilled WWE Superstar.
In the Octagon, his wrestling is beastly, but he's always lacking one crucial quality to earn the big win.
Alexander Gustafsson
81 of 83
Nickname: The Mauler
Current Record: 15-2-0
From: Arboga, Sweden
Fights Out Of: Stockholm, Sweden
Age: 26
Height: 6’5” (195 cm)
Weight: 205 lbs (93 kg)
Strengths: Aggressiveness, Good Standup
Gustafsson did the unthinkable. He gave Jon Jones the fight of his life. He nearly beat him but got caught with some devastating elbows in Round 5.
That final-round flurry helped Bones hold onto his title.
How popular did "The Mauler" get after his performance against Jones? Popular enough to win a cover vote to accompany Jones on the cover of the game.
Georges St-Pierre
82 of 83
Nickname: Rush
Record: 25-2-0
From: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Fights Out Of: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Age: 32
Height: 5'11” (180 cm)
Weight: 170 lbs (77 kg)
Strengths: Athleticism, very well-rounded, disciplined
EA Sports UFC is full of impressive renders, but this one of GSP is my favorite. The front and center look makes it feel as though you're staring into the eyes of the greatest welterweight in history.
Who knows if we'll ever see him back in the Octagon? If not, we'll always have the game.
Jon Jones
83 of 83
Nickname: Bones
Current Record: 19-1-0
From: Rochester, N.Y., USA
Fights Out Of: Endicott, N.Y., USA
Age: 26
Height: 6'4" (193 cm)
Weight: 205 lbs (93 kg)
Strengths: Wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai
Bones is the greatest light heavyweight ever. His haters won't like that statement, but it's true. No other 205-pounder has been as dominant. If his winning persists, the GOAT tag won't need a weight distinction.
I'll try not to go crazy with Jones online, but you've got to put some time in with the cover guy.
