Favre Vs. Mangini: Opening Day Duel?

Andy HJun 18, 2009

It seems to me that there is a story brewing that no one has started to talk about.  Brett Favre, the QB that may have caused Mangini to lose his job with the Jets, could be our opening day QB rival with the Vikings.  In a day where the media loves to find any kind of twist to promote a game, I'm surprised this topic hasn't been at least mentioned.  There are a few reasons why this could turn into a media circus come opening day.

The first reason is how the media totally attacked Mangini during the second half of the season till, well, now.  Brett is the media's golden boy, who loves to talk about his love of football with them.  Mangini, is pretty much the opposite; he only speaks when he has to.

When word got out that Mangini would called out the golden boy for throwing a few interceptions, that started the "These two guys can't co-exist" talks through out the league.  Everyone pretty much knew the reason that Mangini was fired after the season was so they could convince Favre to stay one more season.  Which still didn't work.

The second reason would be the time slot (1:00 Easter time), which really has no compelling story lines in the NFL.  Like I stated before, the NFL and the networks LOVE to create any kind of story line to draw attention to them.  I remember when we had Garcia at QB and our opening game was against the Eagles.  The media had a field day with that story line.  Nonstop talk about how would they react to each other, would they come to blows, will they shake hands, will they go target eachother (you get my point).  With the marketing side of the NFL, you would expect them to zero in on this potential match up.

The last reason really comes down to how the media loves everything that is Favre (I'm guessing Madden will have to come out of retirement as well so he can gush all over Favre).  They also appear to hate everything Mangini.  Rookie bus ride, Not letting spy gate go (ripping on the guy who was being cheated on but letting go on the guy who actually did the cheating), how his players quit on him, etc.  The media will love to have a game where they can have the bad guys take on the good guys.  In the media's eyes, Favre is the good guy and Mangini is the bad guy.  Will we be up for day time drama??

This will be a very interesting game.  Minnesota will be an extremely hard team to kick off the season with.  If they do get Favre, they'll have probably the most potent offense in the league.  To go along with a top notch defense for our new offensive coordinator to get his feet wet.  How will our offensive line hold up against the Williams wall?  How will we get pressure on the QB with Favre at the helm.  Will our CBs be able to pick off Favre?  With all of these great questions we'll have coming into this game, if Favre is able to play for the vikings this season, look out for the media circus that will follow leading up to this game.
