A Couple of Familiar Names Get the Ax

Former Giant phenom Jesse Foppert was released by the Giants organization today.  He had been pitching poorly at AA Connecticut with a 6.27 ERA in 33 innings.

He went 8-9 for the Giants as a 22 year old rookie in 2003, but then arm injuries derailed his career.  He was a local boy, having played at San Rafael High School in Marin and the University of San Francisco.

The Tigers also just released former Twin Jason Tyner from their AAA team in Toledo.  He had been hitting a feeble .172 there.

Tyner’s only real skill offensively was his ability to hit for average.  He had a career .275 batting average in 1,358 major league ABs, but he has no power and won’t take a walk (career OPS of .637).  Not a good combination.

He’s 32 this year and was cut by Milwaukee’s AAA farm team in Nashville earlier this year, so his professional career is probably over, unless he’s willing to go play for a team in the Atlantic League.
