Teams With the Chance to Become a Cinderella
Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens (25-9, 14-2 CAA)
Despite taking on the vaunted, No. 4-seeded Michigan State Spartans in the second round, the No. 13-seeded Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens are coming into this matchup with serious momentum after winning the Colonial Athletic Association title.
Michigan State has the edge on paper, but the program has lost seven of its last 15 games to end season. The Spartans don’t look like the super power they have been in the past.
Delaware head coach Monte Ross told Kevin Tresolini of The News Journal about the reality of his team’s second-round matchup with a college basketball powerhouse:
"Like I told the guys, there are going to be no bad teams in this tournament. There are going to be no teams that aren't worthy of being in the tournament. So we were going to get a very, very good team. I didn't think we'd get the winner of the Big Ten Tournament championship. But with Tom Izzo you're getting a Hall-of-Fame coach. You're getting a team that's battle-tested in the NCAA Tournament. But, you know what? That's the beauty of March, that you get an opportunity to play games just like this.
"
As talented as any team coached by Izzo will be, the Blue Hens have been successful all season, losing just nine games and being defeated only twice since Jan. 1, going 19-2 during that stretch.
Delaware must play smart basketball and get the ball to its playmakers early and often. With high-scoring guard Devon Saddler (19.7 points per game) and center Carl Baptiste (6’9” and 260 pounds) securing the inside and outside respectively, Michigan State has been put on upset alert.
Mercer Bears (26-8, 14-4 A-Sun)
For the fans unsure about the No. 14-seeded Mercer Bears’ chances of beating the No. 3-seeded Duke Blue Devils in the second round, this is a team that beat last year’s ultimate Cinderella Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in the Atlantic Sun Conference championship to earn a berth in the NCAA tournament.
Do not count out Mercer.
Duke has looked terrible at times this season, losing in the ACC finals to Virginia and racking up three losses since Feb. 20. On the other hand, Mercer couldn’t be playing better heading into the tournament.
There are many fans that filled out a bracket this season, including Seth Davis of CBS Sports, who had a hard time picking this matchup despite the vast seeding differences:
Not only do the Bears have just two losses since Feb. 7, but the team’s conference championship has also helped the program build serious momentum heading into a matchup with the Blue Devils on a neutral floor.
With Mercer’s ability to shoot the ball efficiently (29th in the nation with a .475 field-goal percentage) and rack up big points (25th with 79.3 points per game), Duke has been put on upset alert in the second round.
