My Plea To Eric Mangini

Dawg PoundJun 15, 2009

Before I start the article, I just want to let the readers know that I want Eric Mangini to see this. If anybody knows how to forward it to him please do so.

Welomce to Cleveland Mr. Mangini. You have a tough job. You are taking over a team that has the most passionate fans in the NFL. You know you are an outsider but we will embrace you with open arms as long as you act in our best interests.

So if you want to act in our best interests, PLEASE START BRADY QUINN! If you look at various polls on various sites around the internet, you will see that 8 out of 10 Browns fans prefer Quinn over Derek Anderson. Contrary to what you may hear otherwise the reason is because we believe he has the bigger upside.

We understand things from your perspective. You didn't promise anything to anybody who was already here nor did you draft or sign any of them. With your two quarterbacks, you want to look at them yourself. That is understandable.

Now look at from our perspective. We have already seen about as much of Derek Anderson as we can take. We haven't seen much of Brady Quinn, but we have seen enough to know that we want to see more. Here are just a few things to think about.

The wrap against Anderson is that he is inconsistent. I would disagree with that. I say that whenever he has protection he can be phenomenal, and whenever he has the slightest pressure he is horrible. But let me ask you this, what quarterback isn't great when he has all day to throw?

This is the NFL and to think that the protection will always be great is not realistic. Defenders are pretty good in this league. Defensive coordinators figured that out by about week 10 in 2007. Since then he really was only good once. That was a Monday Night game against the Giants.

That was clearly a case of the Giants taking us too lightly. Do you remember the first time they played on Monday night? That was really a microcosm of our season. Our starters got throttled and our only glimmer of hope was Brady Quinn. The reality is that for the regular season game, the Giants thought they had us beat in warm ups.

Sure Anderson did have receivers drop passes last year, but what quarterback doesn't? What about all the times the receiver was open and the throw was high, low, or behind him? Again the slightest bit of pressure causes an errant throw with him.

He also throws into triple coverage and that leads to interceptions. I really question how good he can read a defense.

Now let's look at Brady Quinn. He has mostly played during the pre season at this point. He has been good for the most part. Then made his first start against Denver. The defensive coaches for Denver were all saying that they would have rather faced Anderson.

As good as he was against Denver, I was actually more impressed with what he did against Buffalo. It is well known about how hard it is to throw with the winds in Buffalo. He was also under pressure the whole night. He made good decisions and threw the ball away alot. That is better than throwing into triple coverage like Anderson does.

The bottom line he did get his team into the endzone and lead them to victory in the last minute. That two minute drill that led to the game winning field goal was better than any Anderson has done the last two years.

I can't evaluate his performance against Houston because he really shouldn't have played. He was lost for the year after that. After having two very productive games, the offense did nothing the rest of the year without him. Anderson and Dorsey were both horrible.

So please Mr. Mangini, START QUINN! Don't make us have to stomach another year with Anderson. We can't.

We don't know what will happen but we do know that Anderson will take us nowhere. I know the odds. 7 out of 10 quarterbacks fail. However, there is just something about Quinn that tells me he is not one of those 7. But if he is nobody will hold it against you. So give him a chance.

I know there is the saying that if you listen to the fans you end up sitting with them. Well there is truth to that, but we are fans for a reason. We know a little about our team and who we want leading it.

So go with Quinn. If he works out you will be a hero in this city. If he doesn't,you can look at Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, or somebody else. Either way you will look good.

However if you go with Anderson and Quinn goes on to greatness elsewhere, Art Modell will be more welcome in Cleveland than you.

Just think about that.
