Liverpool Transfer Rumours: Alberto Moreno a Big Miss for Reds

Rory MarsdenMar 13, 2014

Liverpool look likely to miss out on the signing of their much-rumoured target Alberto Moreno, putting a dent in their prospects of signing a top-quality left-back.

The Sevilla star has reportedly revealed to his teammates that he will move to Real Madrid over the summer and not to Anfield.

As reported by talkSPORT, Moreno would have been an ideal signing for the Reds as they have problems in his position.

Sevilla starlet Alberto Moreno has privately told his team-mates that he will join Real Madrid in the summer - and that will seemingly end Liverpool's hopes of luring him to Anfield.

Moreno, who has already appeared for Spain at senior international level, is also being tracked by Brendan Rodgers and former Reds boss Rafa Benitez, who wants to take the left-back to Napoli.

Rodgers has issues at left-back - loanee Aly Cissokho has failed to impress and will return to Valencia at the end of the season, while Jose Enrique has been sidelined with a long-term injury - and Moreno is on his wish-list.

"

The 21-year-old would have added a great deal to Liverpool and would have come relatively cheap considering many reports suggesting he could be bought for around £15 million, despite having a £25 million buyout clause.

Rodgers is currently moulding a very good-looking squad and the young Sevilla man would have been an ideal addition of further quality and youth.

Furthermore, Moreno's attacking style of play—he started his career as a midfielder—would fit well into Liverpool's counter-attacking style which has served them so well this season.

He has scored three goals in 21 La Liga appearances this season, including a rifled left-foot drive against Barcelona last month.

The fact that he is being courted by Real Madrid shows the regard in which the youngster is held.

As is the fact that he has already made two appearances for Spain at senior level. Considering the quality of the Spanish squad, that is no mean feat for someone so young.

It looks as though Liverpool have missed out on a great prospect. But the left-back position does still need to be filled at Anfield.

They should be looking for a similar type of defender to Moreno and they may find that in Wolfsburg's Ricardo Rodriguez.

Similarly attacking, he has chipped in with several goals and assists this season for the German side, and would not hamper what has become Liverpool's trademark attacking speed this season.

However, they will face stiff competition from the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea who are also interested in the Swiss player, per the Daily Express.
