Ranking Bayern Munich's 10 Most Thrilling Performances This Season

Stefan BienkowskiMar 10, 2014

Well, what a team we have on our hands here.

From the robot-like reflexes of Manuel Neuer and the industrious duo of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm, to the Euro-conquering front line of such exquisite talent as Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, this Bayern Munich side have smashed almost anything put before them this season with absolute ease.

With an unparalleled lead at the top of the Bundesliga and a healthy two-goal advantage over Champions League rivals Arsenal, Pep Guardiola's side continue to march to the tune of victory with little sign of fatigue as we approach the final few months of the current season.

Here are 10 of this club's most thrilling matches to date from this glorious campaign.

Wolfsburg 1:6 Bayern Munich

1 of 10

The most recent test of Bayern's durability in this current Bundesliga campaign came from Wolfsburg on Saturday afternoon in a top-of-the-table clash that looked as though it could have offered some genuine trouble to the German champions.

Alas, after an hour of duelling between the two sides in which the Wolves actually took the lead and could have added to their tally, the same old Bayern that we know so well finally awoke from it's slumber. Through a few inspiration substitutions from the coach, the Bavarian juggernaut pulled out of first gear and set about their usual road to victory.

In the end, six gut-wrenching goals were Wolfsburg's punishment for ever considering themselves equals to the Munich club.

Werder Bremen 0:7 Bayern Munich

2 of 10

Sometimes when it rains, it pours. And sometimes Bayern take to the field against lesser sides and have absolutely no remorse or sympathy for their weaker opponents.

In this clash with relegation on the line for Werder Bremen, Guardiola's side were at the peak of their pride in a match that saw the Bavarian club simply toy with their opponents.

Just three days later, Manchester City would travel to Munich and offer a bitter lesson in overconfidence, but on that day, it was all about how many they could put past a team on the run.

Borussia Dortmund 4:2 Bayern Munich

3 of 10

Although this game will technically be written off as no more than a pre-season friendly to most Bayern fans, the opening clash between their beloved club and Jurgen Klopp's Borussia Dortmund was a tight affair that saw the former German champions come out on top.

In the spirit of revenge for a final just a few weeks prior to this summer game, Dortmund wreaked havoc on the Bayern back line with an intimidating degree of success that has since alluded them this season.

It was the last time Klopp's kids truly bamboozled Bayern like they used to do so well before Guardiola changed that for good, making it a game worth remembering.

Bayern Munich 2:3 Manchester City

4 of 10

In one of only two defeats to the Munich side on our list today, Manchester City's unlikely smash-and-grab win in the return tie in their Champions League group stage makes it on to the shortlist due to the sheer amount of shock it caused at the time.

In truth, it showed Bayern's weaknesses in a match that offered very little in terms of actual determination in qualification to the next round of the competition. The German side went two goals up in within the first 12 minutes but then allowed their English counterparts back in and to eventually win.

Certainly worth another watch just for the livid look on Guardiola's face at full time.

Manchester City 1:3 Bayern Munich

5 of 10

It was in this opening tie between two of Europe's most powerful clubs that we finally saw the might of what Guardiola's Bayern could offer and, in contrast, just how far the English Premier League still had to go before being considered contenders for the Champions League.

From start to finish, this was a game that resembled something of a masterclass for Manuel Pellegrini's side to sit and endure.

As a club seasoned in its European campaigns taking on a new side hungry for international recognition, Bayern were quite simply outstanding that night in their first big test of the season.

Arsenal 0:2 Bayern Munich

6 of 10

In one of the more recent clashes on the list, Bayern's recent trip to London where they faced Arsenal in the first knockout round of the Champions Leagues makes it on our countdown.

The jury may still be out on whether the Bavarian club's victory was indeed due to their own efforts or because of Wojciech Szczesny's red card following a spell of utter dominance from the Premier League side, but nonetheless, it was a match that fascinated fans and neutrals alike.

Either way, Bayern look to have killed off this tie within the first 90 minutes and that in and of itself is incredibly impressive.

Bayern Munich 5:1 Schalke

7 of 10

In another recent test of Bayern's unmatched strength, Schalke traveled to Munich just two weeks ago with little respite after the thumping they received from Real Madrid in the Champions League just days before.

Alas, it was a total whitewash from start to finish as Arjen Robben took centre stage with a hat-trick of goals to his name, and Guardiola's side put five past a Schalke team who looked just about done for the season.

Another lowly team was offered little solace from this all-star side.

Borussia Dortmund 0:3 Bayern Munich

8 of 10

The second tie between Bayern and Dortmund on the list is of course the first competitive clash between the two sides this season when the Bavarian club traveled to the Westfalenstadion just before the winter break.

Although many Dortmund fans will quite rightfully point to the makeshift back line that did all it could against the onslaught of Bayern's forwards, poor preparation was perhaps the most telling contrast between where both of these teams now sit.

Dortmund's failure to properly prepare themselves for the coming season really hit them hard in this game and effectively handed the title to Bayern in late November.

Bayern Munich 2:2 Chelsea

9 of 10

For one of the most fascinating games of the season, we travel back to a clash in late August between the German side and Europa League winners Chelsea in the European Super Cup.

What was so interesting about this match was the fact that although it was usually a fixture that offered little incentive to either side, the recent rivalry between not only Chelsea and Bayern, but also Guardiola and Jose Mourinho turned it in to one of the most competitive events of the season.

Bayern eventually came out of the clash victorious, but not after a strong and gruesome fight from a determined Mourinho side. Both teams have gone on to continue their hunt for success since that day and something tells me they'll be meeting again in the Champions League before long.

Hamburg 0:5 Bayern Munich

10 of 10

On the face of it, Bayern's 5-0 win over Hamburg SV should really offer very little to get excited about. Bayern, rampant as ever at the top of the table, traveled to deeply-bothered Hamburg in a match that was only ever going to have one conclusion.

Yet, the performance on show that day was truly outstanding.

Mario Gotze took to the task of dismantling the out-of-form side in the German Cup quarter-finals. Two assists to his name added to Mario Mandzukic's hat-trick and by the time we hit full time, the northern club had had enough. Four days later, coach Bert van Marwijk was sacked.
