Antonio Brown Reportedly Restructures Contract with Pittsburgh Steelers

Joseph ZuckerMar 7, 2014

With the salary cap in mind, Antonio Brown restructured his contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the move saves the team $4 million toward the salary cap:

This isn't the first move Pittsburgh has made to try and ease its financial burden this offseason, either. Troy Polamalu was given a three-year, $20 million extension, which takes $4.5 million off the Steelers' cap hit this year:

Heath Miller also received a two-year extension that erases another $3 million, according to ESPN.com's Scott Brown.

Back in 2012, Brown signed a five-year extension with the Steelers worth $42.5 million. The team had no other options than to alter that deal in order to get a little bit of financial flexibility. Scott Brown noted that the signing of Jason Worilds to a one-year transition tag put the team $15.25 million over the cap.

The fact that the Steelers' cap problems won't affect the future of Brown will be music to fans' ears. The team certainly took a bit of a gamble when it chose to back the 25-year-old over Mike Wallace, who signed with the Miami Dolphins prior to last year.

Brown has repaid that faith and then some. In 2013, he finished second in the league in both receptions (110) and receiving yards (1,499). He also had eight touchdowns and took one punt return for a TD.

With both Brown's and the Steelers' financial future secured once again, Pittsburgh can start looking toward getting the franchise back on track this offseason after back-to-back 8-8 seasons.

While this move doesn't mean the team will be able to re-sign Ryan Clark this offseason, it is back under the cap once again.
