Avril, K Smith Talk Playoffs
Cory SandersJun 13, 2009
When Kevin Smith first wrote that they will 'Definitely make the playoffs', it didn't really bug me. I like that he has confidence and high hopes. It gives me a little hope that maybe he knows something I don't know about their chances. Then Avril followed up saying that playoffs are their goal. Then Calvin steps in and started talking about how he can see them being much more competitive this year.
Here's the thing: The last two years we had to deal with the whole Kitna prediction thing. Now this. I'm really getting tired of the whole thing. I like Smith and I want them to be confident, but neither Smith, Avril, or Calvin have yet to be on a winning NFL team. Heck, Kevin hasn't even been on a team that's won a game. How do they know if they have what it takes? Sure, they know a lot more than I, but in essence this talk holds no weight. Also, the more I think about it, the more I see that it goes against the gospel of Schwartz. He preaches 'get better each practice' while Smith is talking playoffs. Publicly, Schwartz should do exactly what he did: commend the confidence and confirm that he is only focused on getting better right now. Behind closed doors, I think Schwartz should lay into him big time. 0-16 teams don't talk playoffs. What's the point? What if they really are a playoff team? He just spoiled the ending. What if they aren't a playoff team? Then he just gave the nation another reason to laugh at the Lions.
