Luis Suarez Must Continue Scoring Barrage to Keep Reds in Champions League Hunt

Jason PettigroveMar 5, 2014

Liverpool's Luis Suarez continues to find the net at a seemingly impossible rate, propelling the Reds toward guaranteed Champions League qualification and possibly more.

Whilst they still remain an outside bet, Brendan Rodgers' youthful side could yet find themselves atop the Premier League come May.

Not that the manager will countenance such thoughts at this stage, per Matthew Rogerson of Goal.com.

The decision by Liverpool owner John W. Henry to stand firm when Arsenal came calling for Suarez's services has so far proved to be the right one.

And any supporters worried about the Uruguayan's commitment to the Anfield cause have had their fears allayed in the best possible manner.

Per EPLIndex, we can see that not only has Suarez improved upon his performances from last season, but that he is on course to break the record for most goals in a Premier League season, despite missing the first 10 games.

His 24 goals see him atop the Premier League scorers list, and he has been ably supported this season by the in-form Daniel Sturridge who has weighed in with 18 of his own.

Incredibly, their 42 goal return is better than three-fourths of the other Premier League teams' entire output.

With things so tight at the top, Suarez cannot rest on his laurels if he wants to realise his dream of playing in the Champions League.

On league goals alone, he remains the highest scorer in Europe, one ahead of Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.

Just like Madrid's hit man, Suarez is playing at the top of his game and has benefited from the confidence instilled in him by Rodgers.

He told Sport magazine, h/t Jack De Menezes The Independent:

"

Itโ€™s not that thereโ€™s a secret, as such.

Itโ€™s to do with the confidence a player has in himself. His desire. The hunger to score a goal; something I have a lot of.

"

There doesn't seem to be an area of the pitch that Suarez cannot score from at the moment, and it should be borne in mind that none of the Uruguayan's goals have come from the penalty spot.ย

Whenever he picks up the ball in space, you can almost feel the fear creeping into the covering defenders and a collective sharp intake of breath from the stands.

He is fast closing in on his best ever haul of 35 goals from 33 games, whilst playing for Ajax in the Dutch Eredivisie.

To get anywhere close to that figure in the much more physical and demanding Premier League will surely be Suarez's own personal high.

But Suarez is not just a supreme goal taker. His excellence in other areas has been evident.

Despite only scoring four out of the last 33 goals, per Skysports, the Uruguayan's has had a hand in so many others that he has been involved with over 50 percent of all Liverpool goals scored throughout the season.

His assist tally of 10 is the best in the Premier League, per whoscored.com.

It's a remarkable run of form that the player will also want to take forward into the World Cup, but domestic matters take first precedence.

Level with Arsenal on 59 points, both remain just four behind Chelsea at the top of the table. Ominously,ย Manchester Cityย sit only two points further back, but with two games in hand.

Liverpool's next match sees them travel to Old Traffordย in a titanic tussle against old foes Manchester United. Get through that match unscathed, and Liverpool supporters and staff can begin to look towards a successful end to the season.

Anfield plays host to Manchester City and Chelsea in two of the final three games of the season.

By then,ย Luis Suarez may well have fired Liverpool back to where they belong and into Europe once more.
