Tomorrow's Tennis Star
Hush little one
Today is done and your sleep beckons
Let your dreams receive you warmly
And guide you to your course in life
Where you will play amongst your toddling neighbors
At the local sandbox
Walking, you grasp your racket and swing
While being held by Daddy
Guiding you gently to the ways of the tennis motion
Your first match awkward yet fun
Whacking, chopping, spinning, falling
Balls that hit into the net, balls that fly far outside the court
into the unsuspecting outside.
As the years go by, the ability and talent surge inside
Waiting to connect and transform into a prime maturation
The court expands as do the people in the stands
Your hitting is clean and confident
Your strides float and deceive your opponents
Your weaponry unleashes spins, lobs, drop-shots and slices
As you raise your hands in triumph, you are joined by many who follow
You learn the euphoria of hard-fought victories and the pulsating agony of defeat
I watch you over these moment
Rejoice in your glories and console in your losses
I watch as I always have and always will
And then I realize that it was me who was dreaming
As I return to the here and now
And fix you with my gaze
I continue with my thoughts
Hush little one
Today is done your sleep beckons
Your days in the tennis sun will wait
Unless of course...
You want to be a doctor!
