A Letter To Glen Sather

Chris GatesJun 11, 2009

Dear Glen Sather,

During the past few off-seasons your attempts at fixing the Rangers have been questionable at best. The signings of Chris Drury, Scott Gomez, Wade Redden, and Michal Rozsival have not panned out as you had hoped. Now we are stuck with these overpaid, under-achieving players.

Why pay a player, Chris Drury, who has never had more than 70 points in a season, $7 million dollars a year for five years?

Why pay Wade Redden, a player who has been on the decline for the past few years, $3.5 million a year for six years?

Gomez was an okay signing, but he has still under produced. Rozsival is not worth $5 million a year either but, at only four years, is the best signing you made the past season.

Please, don't try to improve the Rangers with more signings like these. Please let some of the younger players get a shot in the NHL. Players like Bobby Sanguinetti, Artem Anisimov, Michael Sauer, and possibly Matt Gilroy.

Please re-sign Brandon Dubinsky and Ryan Callahan. I wouldn't mind if Zherdev got another chance to play for Torts. Possibly, try to sign his to a short term deal.

Sjostrom and Betts definitely should be brought back. They are the reason the Rangers killed off 89% of penalties.

Korpikoski should be brought back at a very cheap deal and be given a little more playing time. Orr needs to be brought back because he is the best fighter in the NHL.

Antropov could be let go, he doesn't really fit in to Torts' style. Mara and Morris could also be let go, as the Rangers have a surplus of defensemen in the AHL. Back-up Steve Valiquette has already been re-signed for 2009-2010.

Please try and get rid of one of the "Big Four" contracts.

Drury has a no move clause so he's going nowhere.

Redden should be given a chance under Torts, as he's a better offensive defenseman than he is a defensive defenseman.

Rozsival would be the easiest to move as he only has tjree years and $15 million left on his contract.

Gomez could also be moved, but he would have to packaged with a younger talent like Sanguinetti.

Please try to make this team better before Lundqvist gets frustrated and demands a trade.

In closing, Mr. Sather, please try to make this season more enjoyable for us Rangers' fans.

Sincerely,

Chris Gates
