What Should LBJ Do Next? 👑

Gonzaga's Austin Daye NBA combine interview:

Ryan MillerJun 9, 2009

How long do you think it will it take you to transition to the NBA?

My process is going to be slower than some. I’ll try to come in and contribute and then after that potentially be a starter or second, or first option on a team later on. You’ve got to work for that.

Why do you feel your process will be slower than some?

Just physicality. I’m not all the way there yet, but it will come, and I will put forth the effort to make it come a lot quicker. But I think that’s the only thing holding me back really and the only concern for me. I think shooting the ball, handling the ball and defense is pretty much there, I just need to keep improving that everyday and the physical ability.

What do you think will impress coaches and scouts?

I think my lateral quickness is pretty good for my size. I think I’m able to stay in front of the guards on the perimeter. I think my length will be an advantage, even if I’m a step behind I still have the length to catch up. It’s always been to my advantage to be as long as I am.

On impressive first day in pre-draft combine drills:

I think I did really well yesterday and today, just shooting the ball and skill work. People were able to see my ability out there and hopefully I impressed some people. They had us doing a lot of offensive feeds, transition work, pick-and-roll offense. They just wanted to see how we could remember plays and see how comfortable we are with the NBA system.

On criticisms over his lack of toughness:

Everyone has something to prove. Some guys get the critique that they can’t shoot or aren’t quick enough. It’s someone’s opinion and you can always change someone’s opinion if you work hard at it.

Do you have any workouts scheduled?

I have the group workouts in Minnesota and Oklahoma City and I will be going to Detroit for sure, and some other teams are interested in me working out for them as well, like Indiana and Toronto so we’ll see how that goes.

You haven’t signed an agent yet. How much has your dad (UCLA and NBA player Darren Daye) helped you throughout the decision-making process?

I’m lucky I have my father who’s been in the NBA, so I can talk to him about the situation that I’m in and what he thinks would better fit me in the long run. And also just as an advisor that can help you out with what teams are saying. My dad’s been helping me throughout the whole thing. I think it’s going to work out in my favor. I’ll get the best information I can and then move forward from there.
