Fantasy Baseball Free Agent Pool: Speed Demons

Ryan LesterJun 9, 2009

Just because you’ve slipped behind in the Stolen Base category doesn’t mean you can’t catch up. Here are some reasonably available SB threats.

Scott Podsednik, OF, Chicago White Sox

Pods is at it again. He swiped four bases last week while hitting .323 (10-for-31) with four runs, a HR, and two RBI.

On the year he’s hitting .304 with seven stolen bases, 16 runs, a HR, and 10 RBI. He’s owned in 15 percent of Yahoo!, 3.5 percent of ESPN, and 12 percent of CBS leagues.

Chris Young, OF, Arizona Diamondbacks

You know the drill with Young—can’t hit for average, but has decent pop and good speed.

Last week he flashed his wheels with four SBs of his own. He didn’t contribute in other areas though, going 5-for-24 (.208) with three runs, a HR, and two RBI.

On the year he’s hitting .178 with eight SBs, 20 runs, four HRs, and 14 RBI.

He’s owned in 29 percent of Yahoo!, 63.6 percent of ESPN, and 43 percent of CBS leagues. Enter at your own risk with him. He’s been known to destroy team batting averages.

Elvis Andrus, SS, Texas Rangers

Elvis picked up three SBs last week while hitting just .222 (4-for-18) with three runs and an RBI. On the year he’s hitting .276 with nine SBs, 26 runs, three HRs, and 12 RBI.

He’s owned in 45 percent of Yahoo!, 64 percent of ESPN, and 51 percent of CBS leagues.

David Murphy, OF, Texas Rangers

Murphy has been picking up steam of late, and Josh Hamilton’s extended DL stay should keep the ABs flowing. Last week he swiped two bases while hitting a robust .391 with three runs and two RBI.

On the year he’s hitting .259 with four SBs, 18 runs, two HRs, and 12 RBI. He’s owned in four percent of Yahoo!, 0.9 percent of ESPN, and 10 percent of CBS leagues.

He’s not going to light up the SB category, but he’s worth picking up to help across the board.

Brendan Ryan, 2B/SS, St. Louis Cardinals

Ryan picked up two SBs last week hitting .391 (9-for-23) with a run and two RBI. On the year he’s hitting .297 with five SBs, 14 runs, and five RBI. He’s owned in three percent of Yahoo!, 0.8 percent of ESPN, and three percent of CBS leagues.

Two SBs last week, so maybe: Placido Polanco, Emilio Bonifacio, Anderson Hernandez

Two SBs last week, but don’t bother: Andres Torres, Jody Gerut, Matt Tolbert, Chris Coghlan
