FOTA Seek Advice from MotoGP Boss over Breakaway

The Formula One TimesCorrespondent IJune 9, 2009

It has been reported in the Spanish newspaper Diario AS that the FOTA teams have approached Carmelo Ezpeleta to discuss a breakaway series. The news comes after Max Mosley sent letters to all eight FOTA teams to ask them to sign-up unconditionally, allowing them to then shape the rules for 2010.

Ezpeleta is the CEO of Dorna Sports (also owned by current F1 owner CVC), the commercial rights holder to MotoGP. Having successfully transferred control of rule making from the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) to the GP Manufacturers Association (MSMA), makes him the perfect man to control a new breakaway series.

Diario AS has said FOTA have already been in contact with Ezpeleta and Dorna Sports who are willing to take control, should FOTA agree to a breakaway series.

Lewis Hamilton is the latest driver to suggest he is ready to leave F1 saying: "I am under contract at my team and will go wherever they go. That's the way it is. That applies for all drivers." His comments have been reflected by Alonso, Webber, Massa, and Trulli.

Ferrari's Massa said: "If F1 is not possible because it is not F1 any more, then we will go to another championship."

Renault's Alonso has been quoted saying: "[I'd] prefer to race in any other category before the new F1"
