Much ire has been directed at the tournament structure after the Melbourne Stars, undefeated in the group stage of the league, were knocked out of the tournament after a single loss at the semi-final stage to the Hobart Hurricanes, who finished fourth.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - FEBRUARY 04: Travis Birt (L) and George Bailey of the Hurricanes celebrate their win next to Glenn Maxwell of the stars during the Big Bash League Semi Final match between the Melbourne Stars and the Hobart Hurricanes at Melbourne

The Indian Premier League's qualifier and eliminator is where the top two face off, the winner progresses to the final and the loser plays the winner of a match between third and fourth is an alternative. But right now, all such talk is irrelevant. The Melbourne Stars are not in the final. Perth, who defeated the Sydney Sixers and Hobart, are.

The Hobart Hurricanes are the main beneficiaries of the system; they finished fourth in the round-robin stage but now find themselves with a chance of winning the whole thing. However, they will have to do so without two key players. Ben Laughlin, who has has been ruled out with injury, and Shoaib Malik, who has duties with his local team in Pakistan.

The Scorchers, playing at home, head into the final as favourites having finished higher in the group stage and perhaps possessing more firepower.

Following the Scorchers victory over the Sydney Sixers in the semi-final, eyes will be focused on Craig Simmons, who smashed a 58 ball 112 to add to his 100 earlier in the season.

Squads

Scorchers: Simon Katich (c), Michael Beer, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Patrick Cummins, Brad Hogg, Mitch Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Craig Simmons, Alfonso Thomas, Ashton Turner, Adam Voges, Sam Whiteman.

Hurricanes: George Bailey (c), Tim Paine, Travis Birt, Aiden Blizzard, Doug Bollinger, Cameron Boyce, Xavier Doherty, Ben Dunk, Evan Gulbis, Ben Hilfenhaus, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Joe Mennie, Jon Wells.
