25 Pics of Fans Being Brought to Tears

Amber LeeFeb 5, 2014

If you’re doing it right, being a sports fan is often an emotional roller coaster. Things can change drastically from season to season, game to game and sometimes even moment to moment.

The high of a big win, the low of a crushing loss and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet your favorite player can all be overwhelming in very different ways. And being overwhelmed often leads to tears.

Here are 25 photos of fans being brought to tears.

Date: January 13, 2007

Event: Indianapolis Colts vs. Baltimore Ravens

A Ravens fan remains in her seat to sob for a bit after losing a heartbreaker to the Colts at home in the divisional round. Indianapolis would go on to win the Super Bowl, which probably wasn’t much comfort to her.

Event: Italy Soccer

This photo is a bit troubling. You've got the sobbing older man with hands grabbing all around his neck and two guys who look like they support the same team but are in a totally different state of mind.

And then, of course, there's all those missing teeth in that decaying mouth. Ew.

Event: Auburn Oaks Tree Removal

Can’t blame Auburn fans for getting misty-eyed during the removal of the once glorious oaks from Toomer’s Corner. They were poisoned by a terrible excuse for a human being two years prior and could not be saved.

Event: Blackburn Rovers vs. Bolton Wanderers

It’s hard to tell if this woman is crying because of the game or if it has something to do with the hooliganism around her. I'm leaning toward the latter, since she’s seeking out the comforting yellow arms of event security.

Event: Michigan vs. Northwestern

You have to think that at some point Northwestern fans are finally going to get used to losing. Obviously, that's still a ways off.

Event: Motherwell vs. Celtic

Looks like a tough loss, but something tells me no one handled it worse than the sobbing shirtless guy. Pull it together, dude.

Date: August 29, 2011

Event: St. Louis Rams vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Rams quarterback Sam Bradford made the day of one of his biggest fans by autographing a “Marry Me Bradford” sign she brought to a game back in 2011. She was so overwhelmed that she broke down in tears.

Event: Germany vs. Spain, 2010 FIFA World Cup

Germany is usually ones of the favorites in the World Cup, which always makes losing that much more devastating. The higher the expectations, the further the fall.

Date: January 3, 2013

Event: Oregon vs. Kansas State, Fiesta Bowl

Not sure what’s got this Ducks fan torn up, considering Oregon beat Kansas State in the Fiesta Bowl that year. Maybe he had a premonition about Oregon's epically disappointing season to come later that year.

The best part about this photo is obviously the other kid—who may or may not be his friend—smirking at the camera.

Date: June 24, 2006

Event: South Korea vs. Switzerland, FIFA World Cup

This doesn't look like the face of a sad soccer fan. It looks more like the face of a person who just snapped her femur in half, and her only companion is the excruciating pain.

Date: October 2, 2011

Event: New York Giants vs. Arizona Cardinals

Considering this was the fourth game of the Cardinals' season, this man’s tearful reaction to the loss seems a bit over the top. Sure it dropped them to 1-3, but that’s not a terribly uncommon occurrence in Arizona.

Date: June 18, 2002

Event: 2002 FIFA World Cup

South Korean fans react to a win during the 2002 World Cup. That year, South Korea actually played host to the tournament and finished in fourth place. Brazil, Germany and Turkey finished in first, second and third respectively.

Date: April 22, 2008

Event: Philadelphia Flyers vs. Washington Capitals, Game 7

Capitals fans are no strangers to heartbreaking playoff losses, but there’s no amount of past losing that can insulate from the devastation of a Game 7 loss. If there was, Caps fans would be immune to it by now.

11.

Date: July 2, 2010

Event: Netherlands vs. Brazil, FIFA World Cup

This is why you should always bring your national flag to soccer games. You can wave it and beam with national pride if you win. If you lose, you can cry alone in your seat and use it to wipe away the tears.

10.

A German man and woman have two very different reactions to the same Formula 1 event.

Event: Baltimore Ravens vs. Tennessee Titans

A Titans fan sticks around after a playoff loss to the Ravens, trying to figure out where it all went wrong. I’m thinking it was somewhere around the wig.

Event: All German UEFA Champions League Final

I’m thinking these are tears of joy. Based on her nail polish, this girl is almost definitely a Bayern Munich fan, and Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the 2013 UEFA Champions League Final. She really looks sad, though, doesn't she?

7.

San Francisco fans gather to celebrate after defeating the Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII. Most of them look pretty thrilled, but there are a few emotional faces in the crowd.

A Czech hockey fan so devastated that he can’t even wipe away his own tears. What a lucky lady—tending to the needs of an adult man weeping in public over a hockey game.

Two devastated Browns fans react to the news that Art Model had decided to move the team to Baltimore.

Event: Athletic Bilbao Fans Watching Europa League Final

Now this is how you cry. This Athletic Bilbao fan puts all these other crybabies to shame with his dramatic collapse onto the steps and sobbing into his team scarf. Go big or go home.

3.

Event: Baltimore Colts vs. Dallas Cowboys, Super Bowl V

A Colts fan gets choked up while receiving an autograph from Hall of Fame Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas. The photo was taken after they defeated the Cowboys in Super Bowl V.

Welcome to the world of every Broncos fan about 15 seconds into the Super Bowl. That crazy safety was probably the highlight of the game for Denver.
