An in Depth Look at The Eagles Coaching Staff

aaronJun 5, 2009

For the Eagles everything starts with Andy Reid.

Reid took over a three win team, and has transformed it into a perennial contender.

Under Big Red, the Eagles have gone to five NFC Championship games, and one Super Bowl.

The Head Coach owns the highest winning percentage in Eagles history.

Offense

Reid's right hand man on offense is Assistant Head Coach Marty Mornhinweg.

The 2008 Eagles' offense set many team records, including most points scored.

Mornhinweg's taken over the play calling duties in recent years.

Another key offensive assistant is Juan Castillo.

He's the Offensive Line coach.

Castillo's in his 15th year with the Eagles, and 12th as the O-line coach.

Castillo's turned first round picks like Tra Thomas and Shawn Andrews into Pro Bowlers, and molded undrafted free agents like Hank Fraley, Artis Hicks, and Jamaal Jackson into NFL starters.

Castillo's been crucial to the Eagles success under Reid.

Defense

Jim Johnson is the unquestionable leader of the defense.

Johnson owns more than 20 years of experience as an NFL assistant, and has been with Reid since 1999.

He's currently on a leave of absence while he battles melanoma.

Without Johnson, there' some question as to whom will be calling plays for the defense.

The heir apparent is Sean McDermott, who is currently the secondary coach.

McDermott's preparing to begin his 11th season with the Birds.

He's moved up with the team beginning as a scouting administrative coordinator to his current position.

McDermott figures to be the man calling the plays for the Eagles D as long as Johnson remains out.

A new addition muddies the situation.

Philly hired Dallas' former Defensive Coordinator, Brian Stewart.  For two years Stewart guided a top-10 Dallas D.

For now, The Eagles website reports he will work with the secondary.

Under Reid, many assistants have ascended into coordinator and head coaching jobs around the league.

Reid's former Offensive Coordinator, Brad Childress, coaches the Vikings.  Johnson's former top assistant, Steve Spagnuolo will begin his first season as the Rams head coach this Fall.

The only thing Reid has not yet accomplished is winning it all.
