New Match Added to Sunday's Royal Rumble PPV

Erik BeastonJan 20, 2014

WWE fans got a small taste of it on Friday's SmackDown when the two teams met in non-title action, but this Sunday at the Royal Rumble, more than pride will be on the line when Cody Rhodes and Goldust defend the WWE Tag Team Championships against legendary tag team and Attitude Era standouts, the New Age Outlaws.

The match was announced on Joey Styles' official Twitter account:

Rhodes and Goldust have reigned as champions since October 13, 2013, when they defeated Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins in an outstanding hardcore match on Monday Night Raw.

Since then, they have consistently stolen the shows that they have competed in. Their tag team chemistry and ability to create drama and thrill the audience are second to very few.

The Outlaws—Billy Gunn and "Road Dogg" Jesse Jamesrecently completed a heel turn that has put them front and center in the storyline involving CM Punk and The Authority.

It would be a great boost to the program for The Authority to wrest more gold away from the popular babyfaces on the roster, especially given Randy Orton's status as WWE world heavyweight champion.

The Outlaws have proved to be competent in the ring despite their advanced age, but they will force the champions to work a slower-paced match. Rhodes and Goldust have been part of many matches where the pace quickens considerably late in the bout, which leads to more crowd participation and a dramatic conclusion.

Whether they can replicate that same type of finish with veteran workers who may be unable to keep up with them, despite the Outlaws being roughly the same age as Goldust, remains to be seen.

What also remains to be seen is whether the match will take place on the actual broadcast, or if it will be relegated to the kickoff show. A graphic on WWE.com indicates the latter is more likely.

The 2014 Royal Rumble emanates from Pittsburgh on Sunday night.
