National Lacrosse League's Top 10 Plays of Week 2

Jim FlanneryJan 8, 2014

Week 2 of the National Lacrosse League season is in the books with two games played last weekend.

On Friday night, the Toronto Rock cruised to a 16-11 win over the Calgary Roughnecks. Garrett Billings led the way for the Rock with 10 points, while Stephan Leblanc contributed five goals.

On Saturday, the Colorado Mammoth came from behind to defeat the Vancouver Stealth 13-12. After more than a year away from the game, Alex Gajic came back with a vengeance, picking up eight points for the losing Stealth, while the Colorado effort was powered by five-point efforts by John Grant Jr. and Drew Westervelt.

Even with just two games on the slate for the second weekend of play, there were plenty of highlights. The Lacrosse Network has released their NLL Top 10 Plays of Week Two with lots of great action.

Among the highlights are two great plays by Grant Jr. He scores an excellent goal in the No. 7 play and then makes a terrific behind-the-back feed to Adam Jones for the No. 6 play.

Stealth goalie Tyler Richards makes a dandy of a save in the No. 4 play, diving behind himself to stop a ball from rolling across the goal line.

But the No. 1 play is one that will probably show up somewhere in the year-end highlights. Drew Westervelt's "Air Gait" play from behind the Vancouver net is as nice a dunk play as you'll ever see at any level of lacrosse.

Looking ahead, Week 3 in the NLL promises to have plenty of interest as all nine teams are in action. Six games in three days should start to separate the wheat from the chaff.

The Buffalo Bandits and Calgary Roughnecks will both be seeking their first wins of the season on Friday, Jan 10. The Bandits face the Toronto Rock while Calgary takes on the 1-1 Mammoth.

The Minnesota Swarm and Vancouver Stealth face off on Saturday, Jan. 11 with both trying to earn their first wins as well. Also on Saturday, the Philadelphia Wings travel to Rochester to take on the Knighthawks and the Mammoth visit the Edmonton Rush.

The weekend's action ends on Sunday with the Bandits facing the Wings in a rematch from Week 1.
