New Zealand vs. West Indies, 3rd Test: Scorecard, Report from Hamilton Day 1

Mark PattersonDec 18, 2013

The West Indies put in a typical Jekyll and Hyde performance after batting first against New Zealand to leave themselves 289 for six on Day 1 of the Third Test in Hamilton.

They began with determination, but a dramatic collapse after lunch left them in a mess at 85 for five.

What followed, however, was a double-century stand between veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul and wicket keeper Denesh Ramdin.

Ramdin added 107 before falling late in the day against the second new ball.

Chanderpaul will resume tomorrow unbeaten on 94—his century would be the 29th of his Test career.

New Zealand did not change the winning team from the previous game in Wellington. The West Indies made three changes for the match, with Sunil Narine a direct replacement for spinner Shane Shillingfordwhose bowling action has been ruled illegal between the Test matches—and Kraigg Brathwaite and Veerasammy Permaul replacing injured Darren Bravo and Shannon Gabriel respectively.

Brathwaite showed his team the way with some disciplined batting before lunch. The pace was slow but the 21-year-old's defence held up well.

At 71 for one at lunch, the tourists' morning had been a good one. However, when Brathwaite fell for 43 to the bowling of Tim Southee, there was only surrender from the rest of the batsmenuntil Chanderpaul and Ramdin combined.

Their stand, in the context of the match, was essential. They have averted the ignominy of another low first innings total, and given the bowlers a fighting chance with the ball when they are called upon to bowl. If Chanderpaul can shepherd the tail and add more runs of his own, a decent position could turn into a good one.
