Celtic Cross: Kevin Garnett and Boston's Finest Unite on Sunday Night

Ron JohnsonApr 20, 2008

It's been four years since Kevin Garnett saw any kind of playing time after the regular season. Four years since he reigned supreme for the Timberwolves in the playoffs. Four years...and the man still got it!

In his first playoff game in four years, KG snagged a double double (16 points, 10 rebounds), while Ray Allen grabbed 18 points and Paul Pierce chalked up 16 points as the Boston Celtics had a postseason holiday at the expense of Atlanta, with a 104-81 win over the Hawks in game one of their Eastern conference opening round series.

Back to Garnett, he definitely feels more alive than the last time he was on the court in the postseason, and the Boston faithful made sure he knew it as they chanted "MVP! MVP!" while he left the court for the last time.

Atlanta can't completely scoff at their performance from Sunday.

Breaking the longest postseason drought by clinching a berth last week (nine years), rookie Al Horford (of the 2005 & 2006 National Champion Florida Gators) made his case for Rookie of the Year by leading all Hawks with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Despite missing two games to be with his wife for the birth of their first child, Garnett played like every game counts and matters...oh wait! They do!

But that wasn't the only shocker over the weekend for Boston. Before the Celtics took to the famed Garden against Atlanta, the Boston Bruins took another win from Montreal to force a Game seven in their Stanley Cup playoff series. While the BoSox used an eighth inning push to win on Sunday afternoon.

To show the unity that the city's sports teams have finally found, both the Bruins and Red Sox attended Sunday night's series opener against the Hawks.

Garnett didn't hesitate to show his appreciation for their appreciation. In fact, Garnett posterized not one but two Hawks en route to giving Bostonians everywhere a reason to rejoice and suffer from laryngitis on Monday morning.

The Celtics look to take a 2-0 lead on Tuesday night. Expect Garnett to continue posterizing Hawks, and in the event that the Bruins pull off arguably the biggest upset in Boston sports since "The Breaking of the Curse" in 2004, the Garden will be filled beyond capacity and rocking more than usual.
