Doug Wilson Gives Sharks Fans Some HUGE Hints

Alex FischlerMay 29, 2009

San Jose Mercury News columnist Mark Purdy had a chat with Doug Wilson a couple of days ago. He mentioned that the NHL Draft is coming up in June and that the Sharks do not currently have a first-round pick.

The answer from Doug Wilson was "Yet." This answer could mean many things could happen to the San Jose Sharks.

The Sharks could trade one of their major players for a first round pick or they could move up in the Draft by giving up their first round pick for next year. And finally, they could choose to stand pat and be content with not having a selection in this year's first round.

However, there are two things I can assure you of.

1) Joe Thornton isn't going anywhere.

2) The same goes for Joe Pavelski.

On Chronicle Live, a sports show hosted by Greg Papa (on Comcast Sports Net Bay Area), Doug Wilson mentioned a couple of reasons why Pavelski and Thornton will be back for next year.

He said that, "It bothers Joe every day right now that the Sharks aren't playing." Wilson believes that "this is the kind of guy that the Sharks want to be in the foxhole with going forward."

There is hint number one. Joe Thornton will be a San Jose Shark for at least one more year.

Hint number two has to do with Joe Pavelski. Wilson says that Pavelski "always brings his game and he is a winner." He also mentioned that Pavelski took responsibility for how poor his line performed in the playoffs.

According to Wilson, that is exactly what he wanted to hear from his players.

So now we know of at least two members of the San Jose Sharks that will be back for next season.

Here comes the biggest hint of them all, hint number three. Patrick Marleau was not one of the players guaranteed a roster spot for next year's campaign.

Neither was goaltender Evgeni Nabokov who obviously did not perform well this post-season.

The main thing to take from this is that this team won't be the same next season. There will be new faces wearing those teal jerseys at HP Pavilion.

Sharks fans have to just trust that whatever trades Doug Wilson ends up making are what is best for the organization heading forward.

And here is one question I have for you fellow Sharks' faithful. Who do you want to see back in San Jose next year?

I know one thing; I really have no desire for the Captain to return.
