Larry Fitzgerald: The Bizarro Wide Receiver

Adam FullerMay 29, 2009

Larry Fitzgerald has me scratching my head.

High-profile wide receivers are supposed to have rapper-esque egos, cause turmoil before, during and after the season and demand exorbitantly unfair amounts of money.

Fitzgerald played his jaw-dropping 2008 postseason with a broken hand, has made three trips to visit members of the US armed forces and offered to take less money if it meant securing fellow wide receiver Anquan Boldin for the 2009 season.

All this while earning an MVP in his third Prow Bowl game, tying an NFL record with three touchdown receptions in a playoff game and putting up career-high receiving yards (1,431), average yards per catch (14.9) and touchdowns (12) in 2008.

Who does this guy think he is?

Here are the questions I would ask him to find out:

With all the upheaval that characteristically happens to a team after a trip to the Super Bowl, how are you staying focused on making another title run in 2009?

What’s the mindset of the Cardinals’ offensive unit with still no offensive coordinator named and Anquan Boldin’s contract still up in the air?

Who gets your vote for 2009 Cardinals offensive coordinator?

How much does having Anquan Boldin lining up on the same side as you affect your performance?

It was discovered after the 2008 season that you had been playing the entire postseason with a broken hand, did you realize it was injured and were just playing through it?

After putting up record numbers in 2008, is your approach to the 2009 season any different than before?

What one aspect of your game are you focusing on improving during this off-season?

Wide receivers obviously rely heavily on their quarterbacks for their success. In the past few seasons you have played with both Matt Leinert and Kurt Warner. How do you adjust your approach to your routes or the game depending on the quarterback?

After the death of your mother in 2003, how special was it being covered by your father in the Super Bowl?

Did you ever think about following in your father’s footsteps and becoming a sportswriter?

Who or what has been your biggest inspiration and driving force during your career?

In December 2008 Angela Nazario won an order of protection against you. Can you talk about what exactly happened? Where does this case stand now? How has it affected your relationship with your son?

You’ve now made three trips to visit US armed forces stationed in various parts of the world. Did the thought ever enter your mind of serving in the armed forces? What branch would you sign up for if you did?

There are photos on your website of your most recent trip to visit the USO stationed in Iraq. How much convincing did it take to let the attack dogs attack you guys in those protective suits? Has Ken Whisenhunt seen those photos?
